I hardly think this is the reason we have not won a flag in 70 years.

I think some people are forgetting this was a general comment from a guy who has now left the Swans. It's about as meaningful as most things coaches and players say.

Yes, its an unfortunate legacy of the South days that we still have the bar for success set so low.

But we are a club that represents an entire city plus a reasonable chunk of another, and we have to tolerate all view points, and cant cater to only certain mindsets (eg Collingwood to criminals).

I can't believe that people on this website are arguing over the definition of playing above your potential. To me, its kind of a bit of philosophy and it depends on how you look at things. On expectations for next year and what Malaxos said, but I cannot put an expectation on the Swans performance for fear of being disappointed. I would like for the Swans to do well next year, like everybody else here but we just have to see what happens. The main thing that I would be interested in is if the players are pumped up, training hard and believe that they can improve on this year.

An excellent point. Malaxos is now out, and wouldn't be privvy to anything other than what he already knew prior to his departure.

If the club is to be regarded as a business (whose product is sport-DUH!), then they would have a business plan. Roos got the job based on selling his "visionary plan" to the club, which, was supposed to cover a period of 3-5 yrs.

Perhaps it went along the lines of;
2003-10th position. Get some good new kids.
2004-6th position. Trade/delist some dead-wood. Get some new kids. Current list benefits from finals experience.
2005-Top four. Much better-stick at it and improve, and have the players more confident with playing September Footy-let's look forward to P/GF appearances.
2006/7-Back to back Premiers. Roos is installed as the new Jesus.

Of course it makes excellent business sense to adjust any business plan along the way. Nobody (including most of us here) expected a PF spot/Brownlow medallist/All Aust. Selections for this season, but this season showed how much passion can overtake "expectation". Let's cross our fingers, toes and eyes that this year wasn't a fluke.

My only hope for the team is that they continue to learn and develop. Not only will they play above THEIR best, but above the rest of the League as well.

That's all we can hope for. Learning and developing is another step towards a Grand Final and a premiership.

This is a big porblem in my veiw, and i think that the way to overcome it is by having an elected board, so that some heavy wait sydney siders could start to muscle in on the club and demand that what is required for this football club to be ultimatley successful, is materialized.
i hope that Roosy and the boys are successful (as they maywell be),
But if we don't do it in this current era, then I think our club will be in serious trouble as far as having a monkey on our back when it comes to not winning premeirships. - Imean , if we get to 25 years in sydney without 1 premeirship, that is a big problem, especially with the amount of goodwill throwen our way by the AFL, and the competition in general.
There is a possible case to be made that Collese and co are incompetent.

And what exactly are these elected "heavy wait (sic)" people going to do? Decide who is drafted / delisted etc? Pick the team?

All the board can do is find the best people available to coach the team and run the footy department, develop the infrastructure to support the footy department, and work on the financial management of the club to ensure these resources can be afforded.

General concensus seems to be that with Roos, Ireland and their support team the first of these is currently in place, facilities available to the club are probably up their with the best, and mistakes have been made in the last area but these are being addressed.

This isn't meant to be a post for or against an elected board - we've been there several times already - but I really can't see what direct impact board elections are going to have on the club's short to medium term on-field achievements.

I am not pro an elected board at this stage, but my post has nothing to do with that, all i want to say is that Carlton and the W.Bulldogs have elected boards, the Sydney Swans don't and I can assure you I am much happier to be in our situation than the situation of those two clubs.

An elected board will never win us a premiership, in some cases they can even cost a club one!!! The South Melbourne/Sydney Swans have had elected boards in the past obviously, and we only have three premierships to our name, with the 70th anniversary since our last one occuring 2 months ago!.

The current situation (onfield at least) seems to be working fine, and Roos and co having 'extra' pressure from an elected board would do nothing but cause a negative atmosphere. Let us never confuse the roles of a board and the coaching dept.
