Waters seeking a seachange of sorts
Although the majority of young draftees would prefer to remain in their home state, for West Adelaide?s Beau Waters, the opportunity to not only be drafted, but to move outside of South Australia is something he is striving for.
One of the hardest at-the-ball players during this year?s National AFL under-18 championships, Waters is firming as a much-sought-after prospect, due to his aggressive play and fearless approach on the field.
And he is not fussed which AFL club that is likely to be with, but he is particularly enthused about the prospect of shifting interstate.
?It excites me to tell you the truth,? Waters told afl.com.au about moving from South Australia.
?I?d love to get away from South Australia and have a fresh start. To have a pre-season and not know anyone ? just be able to concentrate fully on footy.
?I?ve got a pretty close-knit group of friends and we like going out, so getting away wouldn?t be that bad a thing, I don?t think.
?Getting picked at any club would be awesome, so I?m not really choosy.
?I don?t have a big family. I just have my Mum and Dad. I don?t have relatives, so that aspect of it doesn?t worry me and I?m sure my friends wouldn?t just leave me. They?d come over and say g?day.?
Waters admitted that his toughness on the ground was his best attribute, but he also said that it had its downfalls as well.
?Yeah it probably is (my best attribute), but it?s a downside again, because I?m always getting knocked out,? Waters said.
?I?m not a really flairey player, so it gives me an advantage in that I can ruffle someone up.
?I haven?t really watched myself play much, so I?m not sure how I come across, but hopefully it?s good.?
Waters said he had spoken to several clubs at the recent National AFL Draft Camp, but like the majority of future draftees, he was given no guarantees.
?I?ve spoken to a few clubs ? both of the Western Australian clubs, which would be awesome to go over there,? Waters said.
?I?ve spoken to Essendon and Sydney, which is a couple of more interstate clubs.
?I?m not really sure (what?s happening) at the moment. Hopefully that doesn?t mean much at the moment. If I get picked up, I?m not really worried where or what number (I get selected). It?s just to get the chance.?
But he indicated that the opportunity to taste senior football with West Adelaide in the SANFL this year was a major stepping stone in his football development.
?Last year, I played under 17s footy. We won the premiership. We lost just the one game and I then did a league pre-season,? Waters said.
?I then got the opportunity to play reserves football after I got back from Ireland (with the AIS/AFL academy squad), which was good fun and then after the under 18 championships, I got the opportunity to play senior footy, which was just an awesome league.
?It?s pretty much one less (level) than the AFL, so it gives you a sniff of what?s ahead and it shows you how much you have to catch up to other people, because there?s a lot of other better footballers out there than you.?
