    The midfield

Our midfield what do you think of it?

People are always going on about Brisbane's and Port's midfield which is justified at least for the Lions.

Quietly I am pretty happy about our midfield

we have the likes of -

    Foll - Goodes,Bolton,Kirk
    Centre - Fosdike,Williams,Maxfield
    Throw in any of McVeigh,Fixter,Ball,Kennelly

looks alright to me what do you reckon?

IMO it's OK without being great. We have plently of players who can carry the ball with speed and generally deliver well, and tackling is good, but we are weaker in the ball winning department. If we could throw someone with the clearance ability of Coughlan, Black or Mitchell in there it would be pretty good.

Looks a bit light-on to me.

Our talls brigade is very competitive as long as we have reasonable luck with injuries.

But as far as the on-ballers go . . . Bolton, Kirk, Williams, Maxfield and Crouch are quality. . . . after that it falls away very rapidly. If we are expecting to rely on McVeigh or Fixter, we are in big trouble.

Ruckmen: Goodes, Ball, Doyle, LRT, (R. Hall) - Excellent.

Defensive Midfielders: Kirk, Crouch, Mathews, Fixter - Excellent

Offensive Midfielders: J. Bolton, Maxfield - If you know what I mean, you know we're realy light on.

        Receivers: Williams, Fosdike - Meh

        Pinch-hittersavis, Schneider, Kennelly - Classy

What did everyone think of Craig Bolton's cameo in the midfield, I think it was against Brisbane?

He wasn't totally polished, but given the short notice, he earnt significant praise.

If we lost Kirky or Crouchy to injury, I'd thrown B2 in that role fairly confidently.

IMO Craig is best suited on the HB FLANK OR IN THE MID FIELD . He was played as a backman on the talls because we lack another suitable tall to cover this position.

And did a great job of it. He was our best KP backman all year I reckon. Schaubs was good as well. C.Bolton into the guts at times next year, and on the 3rd tall, as I would like to see LRT make the move to CHB next year.

Has he ever played in defence in any position?

Might be a bit much to expect him to play as a key defender in 2004 when all his form so far has been as a forward cum backup ruckman?

Yes, there is a lot of talk about LRT becoming our next big thing as a CHB, but he has no experience of defence, certainly not as a key position player, and still has very little experience of football generally. I'm not sure how we are suddenly going to turn him into a CHB.

LRT, played a bit down back for Port Melb in 2002 and in one I saw him play he did very well at FB. Of course he won't be expected to play in that position, but there is no reason why we can't play him a CHB. Agreed he won't start off there next season, but later in the season he should start to get more game time down back.
