    Draft of 1999

Here is an article from AFL.Com that I played with to get the draft choices in order, the games played and whether they are still in the system.

It is the year that we gave away our first and second Round Draft Picks 11 and 29??? to WCE for Jason Ball.

We received a Second round Draft Pick for Trot Cook (21)

We chose Scott Stevens with pick 21
Simon Doyle with FS pick 26
    Ryan O'Keefe with pick 56
    Brett Allison with pick 70

Looking at how severl of the other teams fared, it was a bad draft and we only really got burnt with Brett Allison and Depending on how the new Kid we pick with Scott Stevens 3RDP, I will reserve my judgement as to whether we have totally wasted pick 21.

Average draft, but I still wouldn't say we did particularly well out of it. O'Keefe was a bargain, Doyle has been hampered by injuries... Stevens was a bit of a waste, and Allison merely filled space. Could've got Guerra or Giansiracusa ahead of Stevens, but I suppose at the time we were looking for replacement forwards after the retirement of Lockett.

All in all, I'd give us a 5/10.
    We hate Anthony Rocca
    We hate Shannon Grant too
    We hate scumbag Gaspar
    But Leo WE LOVE YOU!

with time O'Keefe and Doyle will give this draft a look of greater success. Both are still raw talents, with a likely move to midfield for O'Keefe giving him the opportunity to impress. Doyle just needs to be taped up like a mummy!
      Staying ahead of the game...

All in all, I'd give us a 5/10.
          A bit unfair I think.

From memory, we effectively took Scott Stevens in exchange for Stefan Carey, and Jason Ball for round 1 and 3 picks (11 and 41). Carey only played a handful of games for the Lions, and picks 11 and 41 gave WCE Glass and Munro . . . hardly worldbeaters.

We took Doyle as a father/son pick, but missed Ty Zantuck who was also a father/son option. And O'Keefe was a very good option for a fourth round pick.

The AFL article only tells half the story, because it doesn't analyse how smart the clubs were who traded picks for players before the draft.

The Swans didn't miss any obvious chances at a good player, and picked up Ball, Schauble, Stevens, Doyle and O'Keefe.

Must be worth at least a 9/10 overall.

aside from bulldogs, geelong and melbourne, the draft was a complete bust for most clubs (not including brissy picking j brown as a f/s pick up)

in hindsight the j ball trade wasn't quite as one sided as it initially looked (i've been a critic of it previously)

That's the thing isn't it - looking through the list without the benefit of hindsight, it's hard to see where the Swans made any major errors in who they picked.

I have always thought we drafted very well in 1999 considering we gave up a 1st and a 3rd Draft Pick (admittingly to get Jason Ball, who when fit have been a stand out player)

O'Keefe will only get better from here on in and with his life somewhat on track after the issues of the last few years, added gametime will only see better things out of O'Keefe

Doyle was at the time seen as a 1st Round Pick so we got him cheaply, sadly we haven't yet seen him at his best because of injuries. But hopefully 2004 is the start on something big from him, considering ruckman tend to come on later than other players, so maybe the injuries have come at the right time.

Stevens was a solid pick up, but was unlucky that he got little game time and when he did, he failed to live up to expectations.

Allson well that was a mistake, but for what we gave up for him I doubt it would of cost us a superstar and he did give us good service off the field in the following years.

Plus getting Ball and Schauble was good trading and are both mainstays.

                7/10 for the trading
                8/10 for the drafting
                Once was, now elsewhere

yes thank you brb for pointing that out, i should hope it was a good one for them given they had selections 2, 4 & 5 in the draft.

with the draft these days any recruiting manager who doesn't get at least 1 (possibly 2) quality players with those selections should be sacked

I know we like to ridicule the Allison selection, but in fact the Swans said at the time that if they hadn't taken Allison they would have passed on that pick . . . . and they still kept one spot back to take Fixter in the PSD.

Even though Allison just played 9 games in 2000 (and he was only picked up to fill a gap for one season), he still did much better than other late draft picks like Daniel Hunt, Dwayne Simpson, or Brett Rose.

Allison also did a lot of work off the ball that stats don't show. And as a result of him coming here, he's stayed and is helping bring our young guys to the level where they can play good senior level footy.
