    National/Preseason/Rookie drafts

Would someone be able to explain the difference between the three drafts, and why people are eligible for one and not the other. For example, Amon Buchanan played for us, was delisted and then redrafted in the National Draft, but why weren't Stevens or Rawlings in that same draft? Is it because they weren't delisted and simply decided to leave their club of their own accord?

Also, if rookies want out of the club they are with, do they nominate for the National Draft? And finally, does the order of the two upcoming drafts also rely on where the clubs finished last year (ie. Sydney would have the 3rd last pick, assuming all clubs participated)?

Thanks to anyone that can help

The short answer on the Buchanan vs Stevens/Rawlings issue is that Buchanan was delisted prior to the ND nomination deadline, and the other two were not.

What I don't u/s is, considering that contracts expire at October 31, how/why clubs like Hawthorn and Port are able to delay delisting the players past the ND nomination deadline (which they seemingly are able to do).

I would have thought that if your contract had expired, and you wanted to nominate for the ND, you should be free to do so, which would automatically delist yourself from your previous club's list.

All that aside normally players such as Rawlings and Stevens would hold themselves over until the PSD anyway, regardless of whether their club delists them in time for the ND or not, as it gives more surety as to where you will go.

I've been under the impression that that is why we have two separate list deadline days - and that, although a club might opt not to delist an uncontracted player, the player can delist himself by nominating for the draft by a prescribed date.

I'm not sure if I just assumed that to be the case or if I read it somewhere, but FWIW it was certainly the impression I got from some of the media discussion about Ray Hall and his options if he split from Richmond.
