I think our song isn't the best song (for atmosphere and pure upbeat singability, I'll vote for the richmond one), but it's OUR song, and damned if I'm going to like it ever being changed.

I like songs that threaten to cut loose. The Port song at least shows they are trying to win a flag, what about the Sainters?

I mean "oh i want to be in st kilda, when the saints go marching in"

They make no reference to achievement or a flag attempt of tradition! This is their sole reason for lack of success, I am sure of it!

New Swans Club Song

There is nothing wrong with our current song but I agree with those who cringe at the thought that most of the AFL club songs have their derivation in US college marching songs or even worse, somebody else's national anthem.

What we need are more songs. They must be Australian, inspirational and known to all.

I submit a humble example of such a song for your critical appraisal, but I'm sure there are many better examples around!!

The Port song says they'll never stop, stop, stop till they're top, top, top.
So they stop once they win the minor premiership (ie are top of the ladder) and choke miserably in the finals, definately need a change of words.

Um, er, I don't get this argument at all. Sadly that is one thing NSWmen seem to fail to understand-tradition. The words and tune of the club should be cast with iron along with the Brownlows and Premierships won. Bobby Skilton sang "Cheer Cheer", anything else is the ultimate insult to the history and culture of this footy club.

I was furious when the ill-fated radio commentator Dave Warner attempted to create a 2nd verse. No, sorry buddy, stick to making quips about Jarman having "more marks than a German mint" etc etc.

The concept of a club song, and the attachment the supporters hold to it is something that indicates the huge gulf in sporting cultures between Sydney and Melbourne. In Sydney the only NRL clubs that have their original club songs are St George & South Sydney. The rest have chopped and changed so much that it is a joke. Or as is the case with Manly and the (Wests) Tigers contempoary concept songs such as "Eye of the Tiger" or "Eagle Rock" are used.

In just over 15 years in the NRL the Newcastle Knights have had no less than six attempts at a club song-most pretty lame, some downright morose (We didn't get the Frigates, we had an earthquake, but we have the mighty Knights!") Others of note are Parra's which includes taped chants, or Cronulla's witch says nothing more that "Nah nah nah SHARKS!!!"

Highlights are,

"You can't go wrong in Wollongong, we're the Illawarra Steelers.
You cant go wrong, we're Steeler strong.
Let's give em a taste of Steel. UGH"

or "we're gunna crush ya.
Put the big ones in
Gunna crush ya, and we'll never give in.
Gunna crush ya, like a mean steam train
The Qld Crushers are gunna crush ya like cane."

I'm thankfully happy they have finally gotten rid of "Up there for Sydney". To see the looks of disdain on our Melbourne fans faces at the 1996 GF when they played it as the team was running out was pretty stirring stuff. The accepting of "Cheer Cheer" has been the single largest turning point in turning a club with two very distinct and different cultures into one strong united club. (Chanting "Sydney!!! Sydney!!! helps just a tad as well! ).. I remember when they started playing it in Sydney. Everyone thought, 'Well, this sounds football, doesn't it?" People should not underestimate how important it has been in merging our South Melbourne past into our Sydney present and future.

Harking back to the 80s, we had such beauties at the SCG such as "Kick on, Kick On, You Sydney Swans", and "Up there for Sydney", which is just as bad as 'Dare to be a Bear". Only North Melbourne's attempts at theme songs during their ill-conceived foray north come anywhere near being as bad.

PS:- Bring back the BANJO version. The one we play in Sydney sounds as though the guy has turned a record player to 30 RPM.

The Port theme song sounds as though the Wiggles are doing a performance . All these people in the outer with their hands on their hips singing "We'll never stop stop stop etc". You half expect the next verse to be something like "One potato, two potato, three potato, four".

Still a footy anthem I thought was pretty sad was North Adelaide's (Go you Cocks, by the way!!!!) It sounds as though Glenn Campbell is doing a karaoke night at the Nailsworth RSL.

And Fremantle and the Eagles, proof that WA got it very very wrong in not bringing the traditions of WAFL football across to the AFL. The Eagles are a club created in the 80s, trapped with a daggy 80s theme song. Fremantle's song is even more a joke. Very 80s, very jingoistic.
