    Worst Player trades ever

Ok we have had the best player trade thread, and that got bogged down in the debate between Plugger and BBBH as to who was the best.

I now propose we examine what was the worst player trade ever undertaken by the Swans.

My early nomination would have to be:

Terry Daniher to Essendon in exchange for Neville Fields.

Closely followed by Greg Williams to Carlton for @@@@ing Simon Minton-Connell.

Can we nominate any other trades that we think were the worst

Ert I'm not sure if they were both part of the same deal.

But either one of em for $10,000. We got dudded.

But then again Warrick Capper to Brisbane for $500,000 that we never saw. The VFL/AFL took it to pay licence fees. OUCH!!!

Now while Minton-Connell wasn't of the same quality as Williams, I don't think he did badly with us.
        Once was, now elsewhere

Heartily agree that the worst deal was the Carey Longmire one, however, these guys didn't play for us at the time. It is perhaps the worst deal in VFL/AFL history

The Daniher deal was the worst actual player deal ever for the Swans without a doubt because blind Freddie could see at the time that Daniher was a future champion and that Fields was 30 YO and vastly overrated by the slightly eccetric (some would say crazy) coach at the time
We have them where we want them, everything is going according to plan!

Bringing Scott Russell, Nick Daffy, Adrian Battiston, and Dermott Bereton up here would have to rate as some of the most knuckle-headed dealings by those in the Showgrounds broom cupboard ever.

I know Nick Daffy was a pretty bad trade (actually a terrible trade, he gave us nothing), but remember that without that trade we might not have Barry Hall, so I'm inclined to call it a stroke of genius, especially getting rid of Stafford - otherwise, Adam Goodes might not have won a Brownlow playing mainly in the ruck

For mine Adrian Battiston was the worst. He was so far over the hill it wasn't funny, and they paid him megabucks.

A couple more were Shannon Corcoran - don't know the trade but he was a shocker. I think he fell into the hunched shoulders theory.

And who can forget Tony Begovich from West Coast.

Mind you, the redrafting of Bomford was no masterstoke.

Can anyone remember the early 90's pickups. We sure had some ordinary conveyances then.

On Neville Fields. It may over time have been a poor draft decision and I think Ian Stewart was the culprit. Then again we had some real @@@@@@@@s running the club at the time, who eventually ran the club into the ground and off to Sin City and the centre of the universe.

However to be fair to Neville he did play some cracker games for us and he was one of our better players when he played for us.

I'm glad someone else said this, as I recall Fields being quite useful for us for a time.

A bit rough on Bega a top player for Demons who was also in the best every week in the two's he along with gavin Rose suffered from the NSW players at all cost rule which stated any player from NSW would get a game ahead of another import. And before you jump down my neck, I was in the office of one of these players manager when this player said he was approached by the then coach and told this.

Don't forget with the 'nifty' Neville trade we also on traded Neale Daniher - sight unseen.

I know he didn't play many games but he could play.

We got the best of the Pitura - Teasdale/Jackson/Roberts trade though!

Minton Connell wasn't **** - he kicked 68 goals one year - and we were crap then. It was a 1:59PM trade and now we know all about Carlton in those days (salary cap 110%)

                            Cheers

At the end of '92, early '93, we picked up 4 players, and none of them were there the year after. They were:

                              - Richard Ambrose - Came from Essendon, he was woeful.

                              - Paul Bryce - From Melbourne, played a blinder in our only win of the year, ironically against Melbourne, but did nothing else.

                              - Richard Osbourne - From Fitzroy. Kicked 10 in the only win, a very good footballer. But we hardly got any games out of him. He missed several weeks, after being KO'D, by Dale Lewis against Geelong. He was having fits in the middle of the ground, I'll never forget that.

                              - Tony Begovich - One very ordinary campaigner from West Coast. Didn't get a run in that win against Melbourne, spent the whole day on the bench.

I don't think picking those 4 blokes up, was too successful.
