    social club

can anyone shed light on the fact that the swans don't have an established social club?

why is this? some of the sydney afl clubs have social clubs of their own. is it because the support is still seen as too little or are they holding off on the possibility of a permanent move from the eastern suburbs to homebush area?

    just curious.

then again, i think it would be worth trying 15-16 players on field so what would i know

Interesting question and one I am not too sure we know the answer too.

I do recall reading somewhere in the past that they had decided while they wanted a social club it was thought better use of money and resources if it was put into the players & club facilities which they have done.

One would think with this foundation they have started (that is supposed to make us self sufficent through the lean times), might just be the way to raising the capital for this type of venture.

One word of warning though, most of the Melbourne Clubs have found to their horror that social clubs with pokies are not necessary the way to financial hevean. One would think also in Sydney there is an over supply of these venues as well.

Worth a suggestion to the new GM for the next newsletter, maybe he can do a question and answer section every second edition.............

When we moved up to Sydney in 82 one of the many promises the VFL gave us (and later broke) was that we would have our own "leagues club". We moved and nothing happened in this regard.

Ever since then we have had stop gap messures such as the Moore Park Bowling Club in the early 90's, the link with Easts Leagues Club in the mid to late 90's and the current Fox and Hat deal. The club in the pass has ruled out building a social club within Moore Park itself, as they feel it wouldn't have the impact as City based one would have.

Easts still sends me free membership cards every year - two of them in names that have not been on the Swans membership list for years.

I personally hope that the club won't get pokies... I'd like us to be financially secure, but not at the expense of the community. We can operate on football-related revenue.

Actually I've thought for a while that the situation now FOX is in existance is different, prior to that I would've agreed with them. FOX doesn't get huge traffic 24/7 but enough I would've thought to sustain a club (dedicated merchandise, etc. etc.). I dare say they could pick up space in there somewhere pretty easily, maybe...........

Wasn't there a peiod of time when there was the connection to the Aussie Rules Football Club (I think that was it's name) up at Kings Cross for many years. I remember going in there in 96 and they had RL showing on all the TV screens.

True, and this statement was before we became a successful side in 96, might have something to do with the expirences of the Moore Park Bowling Club, though I guess traffic on match days would be very useful indeed.

Onto what Charlie said, yes I guess I can understand your view Charlie, but if the club decided to have one they would look to making it profitable otherwise there is no point having one, and sadly pokies would most likely be involved.

                        Fox and Hounds

I wouldn't mind the Fox and Hounds if they put in a little more than their current token effort.

Last time we went to what the dingbats in Swans marketing persist in calling "the Swans Clubhouse" there was one jumper and a team poster on the walls.

I think it'd make a nice spot with the shady trees tables outside it just has less Swanishness about it than my living room.

Same here and we have lived in Melbourne for the last 2 and a half years and my daughter has moved to Darwin and she still gets one! But we do actually visit the club's coffee shop when we come up for games.
We live close to the Hawthorn social club down here and my brother is a member. It is a great facility and they use it a lot ( I must confess I have been there) It is a shame there isn't one in Sydney.

Of course the SFL Wests Magpies have a going-concern, bricks-and-mortar Social Club, located at Croydon Park. The only one in town, as far I know. Granted it's located in the Inner West, a little out of the way for pre and post-match celebrations but as a sideline it's a shame to think that trhe Collywobbles seem to have more interest in the Club as a social venue, than the Swans do.

Yeah the amount of Collingwood stuff in there bugs me too but I do know a few Sydney based Collingwood supporters who do use it, it's perfect for the 'Woods needs in Sydney at the moment.
Totally wrong demographic and location for the Swans tho', Fox would have to be the place using existing buildings fit out a purpose facility.
