Sydney-only best team

How about a best team ever to play out of Sydney, as most players are still fresh in the mind.

Heres a first stab off the top of my head

HF: M.Oloughlan B.Hall D.Rhys-Jones
FF: C.Obrein T.Lockett W.Capper

Inter: M.Bayes, B.Round, D.Lewis, ?

For a fairly ordinary last 23 years, we have had some big names go through the place.

While I think eventually, T Kennelly will turn out a fantastic player please remove him from the above side as it is a disgrace he is even mentioned before the likes of Denis Carroll, Stevie Wright, Gerard Healy, Tony Moorwood, David Murphy and Bernard Toohey.

Here is my attempt (just off the top of my head so correct me if you can think of someone I have forgotten):

Int: A. Goodes W. Schwass B. Mitchell D.Lewis
Coach: R. Eade

Defense is a bit tall but still with the mobility of Roos , Bayes and Carroll. Schwass can coem off the bench and play on the half back line for some run.

Middle looks strong with the genuis of Wiliams feeding the speedsters in Williams and Murphy on the wings. And you have the grunt of Round, Kelly and Cresswell (nice balance).

Fowards look strong, while different styles both Capper and Lockett can lead or stay back for the strong mark. Moorwood would roam far and wide and be used as a great link man, while O'Loughlin and Healy could turn a games in a matter of minutes.

Fair enough. My memory was failing me a bit.

I still think B.Hall is a better CHF than T.Moorwood, and I'd have to have Bayes on the bench with Roos at CHF for height reasons.
D.Lewis gets dropped.
No point having Creswell, Kelly and G.Williams all around the ball, so Creswell get put on the bench. Rhys-Jones was better than Schwass so Schwass gets the back pocket.

I think S.Wright is lucky to be there, but cant think of an alternative.

Forward could be a bit top heavy, but B.Mitchell can replace Capper in the forward pocket if conditions dont suit.

Of that starting 18 I would remove Schwass, Kennelly, Roos, Nicks, Paul Williams, Rhys-Jones, Hall, O'Brian and Goodes and from the bench I would remove Lewis. Though some of the ones I took out of the side above would still get a place on the bench.

Round has to be the ruckman because he was the TOTC ruckman and was a major figure in the early days in Sydney. I would be Bayes at CHB before Roos just because Bayes filled the position for longer and was just as good as Roos was for us. Kelly, Cresswell and Greg Williams I agree with as the starting midfield and I would have Maxfield on a Wing with Murphy, and Mitchell moving onto a Forward Flank.

I wouldn't even think of putting Rhys-Jones in the team because he left the club because we moved to Sydney so how you could think of putting him in is beyond me. Nicks, O'Brian and Lewis all tried hard when they played but are not good enough to make such a side. Current day players such as Hall and Williams would be pushing for a bench spot at best and Kennelly while certainly good enough to make this side in 10 years time, its way too early to even think of putting him in it.

C: Maxfield Williams Murphy

Nicks played SOO footy, OBrein was a very handy combination with plugger in our most successful season in Sydney, and Lewis....well hes been dropped from my revised side.

Remember that the current squad is the 2nd best performing side in Sydney's history, so a fair number of players need to be considered. Goodes, Hall, Williams and O'loughlan are definates IMO.

Just because Nicks played SOO doesn't mean he is good enough to make the side. Dale Lewis played SOO as well, but that proves nothing in terms of picking our best side over 22 years. On O'Brian one season does not make the man. Sure he was successful along side Lockett in 96, but come 97 when Lockett missed most of the season O'Brian was battling form in the 2nds and when he got back into the side it was as a defender, which was where he stayed until he retired.

Considered yes, but really you have to put players like Willo, Hall and Goodes up against other simular players. O'Loughlin does belong in the side and that I won't debate, but Willo, Hall and Goodes at worst can make claims to a spot on the bench, but really I feel there are better players in their positions who have performed over a longer period

Ok, but IMO a good player in a successful side is better than a good player in a poor side.

Healy on the bench would be an insult.

Are you picking the 22 best players, or the best team?

If it's the best team, then there's no way you'd pick both Tilt and Dunks . . . they were both out-and-out quality full-backs and would have got in each other's way.

Ditto for Lockett and Capper . . . they could not have played together.

Mark Bayes was one of my all time favourites, but Roos was the best CHB I've seen at any club. I'd pick both of them, but play Bayes as a utility . . . there weren't many positions that he didn't play at one time or another.

Mitchell was the perfect foil for Greg Williams, but on his own he was just average, and a lousy kick for goal. There's no way you'd call him a quality forward.

Morwood was a quality forward, but more a pocket or half forward flank. When he played at CHF or FF it was usually as a last resort. Bayes was a better CHF than Morwood until injury cut down his leap, and Hall is already a better CHF than either of them.

Healy was one of the best footballers ever to pull on a guernsey. Starting him on the bench could cause a riot. Just having him and Williams on the ground at the same time was enough to make any opposition sweat. If you could've put Kelly with them, I don't reckon the opposition would have bothered to turn up.

Moose in, Ackerly out. Moose delivered more punches to the back of the head than any other backman in Swans history. It's a shame they don't keep that stat.

On David Rhys-Jones. He was one of the most passionate about going to Sydney. He just got offered heaps to come back which probably puts him in the traitor class. However, on pure talent would have to be in the team. Was very gifted in the skills department, pity he partied too long and too hard.

If he was a level headed footballer there is no doubt he would have walked a Brownlow in.
