I have thought for a while that Ablett would make the step up. He reminds me a bit of Kevin Dyson.

Still our defence is in disarray, as I expected in Dunks' departure. This is the biggest area Roosey needs to work with. I'm scared we simply don't have the cattle out back.

Ablett certainly looks like a footballer. My worry is that he hasn't put on any strong performances other than a tantalising glimpse here and there. I'm sure he'll take the next step this year.

IMHO if you put Barry, Saddington and Seymour back into the defence, it'll be much stronger. Schauble and Warfe were the only real specialist backmen in there all night - I think Craig Bolton (Colton as opposed to Jolton) was injured early?

Why? He's a professional footballer and plays like a headless chook. I don't give a toss how much he throws his body into the fray. Until he develops some usable skills under pressure and grows a football brain, he's useless. Just because you like him because he's a "pretty boy" doesn't mean we need to be kind to him. Until he actually plays a good game, not just a 'not bad' game, I will continue to think he is woeful.

Did you love it when he was open at CHF, and on his left foot with no pressure barely scraped it in for a point. Then another time he was open, had a chance to handball to O'Keefe, but took a shot and sprayed it. And the less said about that set shot straight in front the better.

Maybe he should further his options with Cleo and look to build a modelling career, to appeal to shallow females who like blonde beefcake looks, because his football career is looking limited.

Rushed through a family dinner to get back home for the last quarter and a bit, thank god I missed the carnage of the 2nd quarter.

The first thing I noticed was a full-strenght Lions team, playing an experimental Swans team so I wasn't upset at all. The Lions don't have any players to experiment with given they had to ask players to take a paycut so they were always going to be strong.

I had the advantage of seeing some really exciting footy from our youngsters. Some very exciting play like the tap on from McVeigh and some of Schneider's work was exciting too. It was a pity he couldn't finish some of his great play but the signs were good.

You could tell the boys wanted to keep the ball alive and kick goals!

As for The Bolt, well he just needs some more time in the ACT I think. Kinda reminds me of Warren Tredrea. He is still spraying his set shots badly.

Schaubs being man-handled by Lynch and getting punished for it by the blind orange maggots was the main reason for the blowout. That we wern't outclassed all over the ground in the circumstances is a pretty good effort really.

But Schaubs is going to have to get to grips with fullback -- and quickly too. Given his build and apparent lack of nastiness, he might have to develop a 'scragging' type of style, similar to Silvagni. It'll be interesting to see him develop in the role and Roos leaving him on Lynch for the experience will certainly help that.

The newbies looked good, but then they always try harder to impress than the old boys. They all went short and wide a little too much for my liking -- reversion to the 'old' ways under pressure perhaps?

Scotty -- awesome. Still skinny-as but pulling down marks everywhere. He's been brilliant so far, let's just hope he takes it with him to Rd.1.

Same old...same old...There were positives 4 sure from that game...some of the teenagers did really well under the circumstances. BUT I find it almost incomprehensible that any team, be it Swans or Richmond, can not score ANYTHING (not even a point) in a quarter of football. It is indeed a worry, but not half the worry that the full back dilemma is. Even before last season, knowing Dunks was coming to the end relatively soon, I wanted us to be recruiting a new FB...Pavlich or Mal Michael who were both either coming up to end of contract or were out of contract. FB is our greatest problem this year, let alone Jude not being able to kick (AGAIN)...geez, how far out was he...25m??? 30??? sheesh...it was almost as bad as a Mott special. These guys must shape up this year or ship out. Two games this year, and two shockers from AS (though I thought Lynchie got the best of the umpiring decisions)...and as for McVeigh...he needs a couple of years to fill out -- he's well out of his depth in the As right now. Did he touch the ball in the 2 games? Yes, I know that tap was nice and intuitive...he'll be good in time. Very impressed with Stevens so far, but not a lot of others. Its Willo, Stewie and Cressa carrying the team again...where are the second tier players? Nicks etc? Maybe it'll get better when Saddo, Seymour, Magic, and Nick Davis, etc get back...one can but hope.

first of all, was every body was watching the same game. yes some of the team, by their own admission, were below their best but would people lay off rowan. He had a great game. we would have lost but so much more had he not been playing. i think that rowan, Goodsey, josh thewlis were amongst our best players on the night.
i also agree that frosty should have been delsisted years ago, he has done S*** all for.

Did anyone see the new Melbourne full back? Ferguson I think his name was. Picked up around no 60 odd in the draft. Tall (maybe 6'5") and agile, and could easily play in the ruck. Did a reasonable job against Richardson. Why didn't we snare someone like that?

I think he can do some very good defensive work, and we will probably need him in there if he is fit this season.

Yeh, its a weird one, because if you watch the way he kicks it, he actually has a decent looking kicking style, its just that his radar is way off

You've both hit the nail right on the head . . . he does have an impressive long-kicking style, but he needs to take a leaf out of Dunkley's kicking manual.

Dunks could kick 50 metres with either foot, but couldn't hit a barn door from 10 metres. So, unless he was certain of hitting a teammate on the chest, he invariably kicked to a defensive position . . . down the boundary, or failing that, into a 50:50 open space (if he didn't hand-pass, of course).

Roos needs to take Warfe aside and explain the facts of defensive life to him. If he could eradicate those wasted kicks, Warfe could be a top defender.
