Saddo also primed for a big 2004.

Saddo will be very handy if he stays injury free. He is confident which is half the battle.

Saddington primed for a big 2004

Sydney Swans key defender Jason Saddington believes he is primed for a big season after a healthy pre-season and overcoming the quad and knee ailments that interrupted him last year.

?Pre-season training has been going very well,? Saddington told afl.com.au.

?I have stayed injury free which is good as it?s been the first time in a few years where I haven?t had an injury in pre-season and I am feeling fit, strong and really enjoying it too. I am 100 per cent fit with no problems at all.?

Saddington admits he has not fulfilled his potential and hopes the strong start to the season will see him become more dominant in 2004.

?I want to consolidate myself a bit more as a key defender. I think last year I let myself down a few times or I got beaten by quite a few players so that was quite disappointing.

?This year I just want to make sure I become a consistent solid defender and one who is always hard to beat.?

Sydney?s preparations for the new season have been hampered by their extended season last year and their training ground - Lakeside Oval - opposite the Sydney Cricket Ground remaining unfit for training.

However, the 24-year-old feels it won?t affect their early season performances.

?We have been at a few different grounds, at a few different schools and different places here and there so it has been a bit different.

?It is nice to just stay at the club all the time but I think the guys have adapted to it pretty well and everyone has trained just as hard so I don?t think it is going to have too much of an influence.?

Barry Hall, Michael O?Loughlin, Ben Mathews, Leo Barry, Jared Crouch, Paul Williams, Matthew Nicks will be rested or not play due to injuries in Sydney?s first hit-out of the season against Essendon at North Sydney Oval on Saturday.

But Saddington expects the players taking part will play with every intention to cement themselves a spot - like Adam Schneider did last season when he made his debut in the now traditional fixture and went on to play every senior game.

?(The game will test the players) to see where they are at the moment and work out some things you may need to improve on over the next few weeks before the season actually starts.

?It is also a good chance for the young kids to show what they have got and try and get themselves in there at the start of the season.

?It is also exciting for the more experienced players to play with those young guys because normally you don?t get to. It is going to be a good challenge for everyone,? he said.

So far pretty much every player in the team is primed for a big '04...

Yes, true, and may sound like a bit of a yawn. But if there are two players I'd like to see at full fitness for a full season it would be Magic up the front and Saddo down the back. Mind you, that's taking a few others for granted; but we certainly didn't see the best of Saddo last year, and if he can play to his potential for even half the games he'll do us a power of good.
He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)

I really want to see Saddo do well in 2004.

He's terrific when he is playing well, he's a guy who just goes about his business but he has to face facts about his opponents and lift himself to the aggressive plane they are on.

        Tarrant
        Brown
        Tredrea
        Carey

Saddo will play on these guys at times and they will crack us if they aren't stitched up.

This is a crucial year for Jason whether he likes it or not.

Just read the article on Saddo, wow what a bonus for us it would be if he can just step up and fill one of those crucial positions for us, he sounds very fit and ready to go.

Reports say he got towelled up by Lloyd again, is this true?

I'm disappointed he doesn't seem to be able to hold down the key posts that he desires to.

Hopefully Schauble and Bolton will do the job for us again in '04

                  AJN,

He got absolutely flogged by Lloyd...unfortunately for Saddington unless he plays on someone who weighs 75 kilos he will be outmuscled every time.

If he doesnt come up with the goods this year i would punt him.

Schaubes got towelled up by Lloydy in the same game 2003. He went on to have a solid season I thought.

It's a bit unfair and a bit of bad luck too because Lloyd has bulked up considerably and defenders are always under the pump at the start of the season.

I didn't see the game but I can't imagine that our midfield was protecting the backmen all that well.

Defence generally tightens up as the season progresses!

P.S. This is my last defence of Saddo for 2004.

When I heard that Saddo was completely and totally humiliated by Lloyd on Saturday, I thought "Oh no, not again", but I've decided to be positive like most people on this board are. I'm going to wait to make a decision until a couple of games into the season proper. Also, on a slightly different note, its just not all the players in the AFL that say they're ready for a good season, it's also the 16 teams in the AFL. By the looks of it, all of the teams will be in the top 8 by the end of the season!
