    We're a Superclub!

    At least according to Eddie.

"Sydney can have a cost-of-living component added; that is fair. But both they and Brisbane have gone from basket case to superclubs. They no longer need help". (from Eddie's column in the Saturday Herald-sun).

Well, we did have a pretty good year last year, but I think labelling us a Superclub is going a bit too far. I can't work out if Eddie's surprisingly ignorant of the Sydney market (lots of bandwagoners who only take an interest when the team's doing very well, quickly drop off when fortunes drop, AFL a distant third to League and Union in terms of media coverage, etc), or whether he's just a dishonest little...

Given that the Pies have spent a week up here in the west in each of the past two pre-seasons and his players have commented on how little the kids they have coached have known about AFL football, I know which one my money is on...

this is about control of the future of the game. from Eddie and the big 4 clubs in melb's perspective, Sydney is a huge threat if they continue to develope at the rate they have for another 10 to 15 years, sydney will be THE most powerfull club in the AFL.

I've always believed that the Salary Cap is not the place to put an increase to cover a cost-of-living differential. We could choose, if we wanted, to put the whole $900,000 (or whatever it is) in Barry Hall's pocket. ALL clubs should be on the SAME salary cap, and then a % added to ALL players in ALL clubs for cost-of-living for their particular city.

        EG Salary cap $4m.

Eagles/Dockers add nil (Perth cheapest place to live).
        Crows/Power add 2%.
        Lions add 3%
        Vic clubs add 5%
        Swans add 9%

Numbers are an example (I haven't checked them) but the point is ALL cities have different cost of living expenses. The other option is a flat $ amount instead of a %. Cost of living is the same whether you are Adam Goodes (high $) or Jarrad McVeigh (low $). They should get say $30,000 EACH which would even it up more than having a %. This would mean the cost of investments/cars etc the players make (hopefully they are!) would be removed PRIOR to the cost-of-living allowance as these are the same cost for ALL players across the competition ($50,000 shares or a $1m house on the Gold Coast cost the same regardless of what club you play for!).
