Sydney?s Amon Buchanan had a forgettable 2003 season to match the forgettable loss against Carlton in week one of the Wizard Home Loans Cup.
But many inside the Swans believe good memories will soon start to flood in.
The number 52 overall draft pick in 2000 fractured his ankle sidelining him until round five last year, and two weeks after being named as an emergency for the senior side in round 14, he suffered a season-ending knee injury.
Then, shortly after celebrating Sydney?s successful season, Buchanan found out was to be de-listed, before being redrafted with the Swans third pick last November.
?Last year was a year for me to forget on a personal note,? Buchanan told afl.com.au.
?I had a bit of a shocker, but it?s just great to get a pre-season under my belt and it?s really, really good to be back in the team.?
Sadly for the 21-year-old, his first game back this year was a loss to Essendon in a trial at North Sydney Oval, and second was the 102-point thumping at the hands of Carlton last Sunday.
However, coach Paul Roos said Buchanan?s effort was one of the shining lights in an otherwise disappointing match against the Blues.
?I was really pleased with Amon Buchanan?s effort as I thought he just worked really hard,? Roos said.
?There were a couple others, but Amon really was the one I thought had a red hot go.?
His performance also caught the eye of captain, Stuart Maxfield, who expects some big things from ?Monty?.
?I think Amon has been great (in pre-season). He was certainly one guy on the weekend who showed a real want to put in for the side and went in pretty hard to the footy and used it pretty well too.?
Buchanan was happy with the way he played and that his intent was noticed.
?I think I can say I tried hard all day, but it was really disappointing to lose by that much and everyone is pretty flat about it.?
But the former Geelong under-18?s representative believes the team can turn it around on Saturday against Collingwood.
?I think all the boys will be really keen to show we are not just going to roll over like we did against Carlton and bounce back.?
Personally, Buchanan hopes he can continue to build on a good pre-season, improve on a few weaknesses and cement a regular spot anywhere.
?I see myself starting up forward, maybe rotate through the midfield and even down back. I think today in football you have got to be much more versatile.?
