Suburban football was alive and well at McHale Stadium on Saturday as around 5,000 Collingwood diehards and just a sprinkling of Sydney fans watched Sydney prevail in the first week of the Wizard Regional Challenge Series.
The Swans 12.8 (80) defeated the Magpies 6.11 (47).
Although the result mattered little in the overall context of both teams? preparation for the 2004 season, it allowed the sides to experiment and provide opportunities for some of their younger players.
Bo Nixon, Zane Leonard, Guy Richards, Luke Shackleton, David King, Cameron Cloke, Dane Swan, Heath Shaw and Julian Rowe were all given a chance to show their wares for the Pies.
Sydney played several rookie-list players Scott McGlone, Paul Bevan and Aaron Rogers, while Jarrad McVeigh, Sean Dempster, Mark Powell, Amon Buchanan, Daniel Hunt, Nick Malceski, James Meiklejohn and Matthew Davis were also given a run.
But it was dynamic Swan Adam Goodes who was one of the standouts, showing he was set to continue on from his Brownlow Medal winning form of 2003. He finished with two goals and shone in the ruck while also providing a target up forward.
Goodes? Brownlow Medal mate of 2003 ? Collingwood skipper Nathan Buckley was also on song ? particularly in the third quarter, when the Pies got right back into the match.
Sydney forward Barry Hall worked tirelessly, despite registering just one goal for the match, while midfield teammates Nic Fosdike, Brett Kirk and Paul Williams were prominent.
Talented youngster McVeigh ? the younger brother of Bomber Mark ? continued his impressive start in 2004 and showed he will be one to watch in 2004 after he was taken at No.5 in the 2002 National AFL Draft.
Collingwood midfielders Shane O?Bree and Brodie Holland were solid throughout the course of the match, as was ruckman Josh Fraser. Yet-to-debut Magpies Cameron Cloke and David King also showed good signs.
Collingwood missed Chris Tarrant, Anthony Rocca, Shane Woewodin, Paul Licuria, Tarkyn Lockyer, Simon Prestigiacomo, Shane Wakelin, Ben Johnson, Andrew Williams, Richard Cole and Rhyce Shaw.
Sydney lined-up without Michael O?Loughlin, Leo Barry, Adam Schneider, Jason Ball, Lewis Roberts-Thomson, Ben Mathews, Matthew Nicks, Stephen Doyle and Heath James.
Swans coach Paul Roos said the effort went some of the way towards atoning for last week?s disappointing loss to Carlton. ?We realise the team that played last week is not going to be the team that represents the club.
?I think the players were generally disappointed on their attack on the footy (last week) and really, it was nothing to so with confidence; it was just a thing about getting out and playing footy and that?s all they really wanted to get out of today.
?That was the main thing to get out of today?to make sure we were hard again at the footy and that?s what the players wanted to focus on,? he said.
Collingwood coach Mick Malthouse wasn?t much more enthused about this effort. ?I don?t know if there was a great difference from last week, but we?ll certainly continue experimenting with some young blokes.
?I thought a young bloke like Zane Leonard and Heath Shaw jumped up today. They?re the two real positives. I thought Guy Richards continued his development and Dane Swan did as well.
?There were a number of young kids that certainly needed to be added to our list and they?re doing that,? he said.
