Guess who's out of contract at the end of next year...

    A certain L. Hayes.

Along with Riewoldt, Koschitzke, Dal Santo, Clarke, McGuire.

Ball, Goddard, Hamill and Gehrig come out of contract this year.

The great St Kilda salary cap squeeze is about to begin! Question is, what would it take to prise Lennie loose?

What would you be willing to sacrifice for the player that, in my opinion, was the worst oversight in our club's draft history?

Worst oversight! Try Wayne Carey and James Hird.

      S. Crawford might have been a handy pick-up, too.

Played a part I'm sure in getting him the captaincy this year.

Was wondering was there a reason why we didn't get him or was he overlooked in favour of someone else???

Finally there is a use for the Saints' captaincy rotation system!

It means that should Lennie want to come up to the Swans, they can't bribe him with the (c). It will be a case of "been there done that, now they are giving it to someone else"!

I can't see Lennie heading North. Apparently he loves it down there!

They will find the room in their Cap. I mean if Brisbane can and they pay their stars according to team performance (oh what a performance), then Saints surely can (unless they win the Flag this year).

Sorry to douse the flame and don't get me wrong, love to have him here.

Ok... with respect to Carey (don't think we had any claims on Hird and Crawford?), who I'd forgotten about, I'll alter my opinion to "worst oversight that is currently hurting us".

            That better?

              1998 draft.

Pick 3 - we got Nic Fosdike
Pick 4 - we got Fitzgerald.
Pick 8 - we got Jude Bolton
Pick 11 - they got Lennie Hayes.

Sigh... enough to break your heart, as good as Bolton is and as good as Fosdike may yet be.

I think we were entitled to pick Hird as a zone concession pick but assessed him to be the third best of three possible candidates for the two picks!

If this is supposed to make me feel better about missing Hayes, it ain't working!

We had dibs on Longmire at one stage as well...

Why do we have to keep sawing saw dust here?

There is little worse debate in footy than the draft picks that got away!

There is probably some dumb bum thread on some other team's site crapping on about, "how did we miss out on Goodes rah rah"

We missed a few and we picked a few, every side has the fortunes and the regrets

The worst thing is, would they have become that "great" player if they stayed with us?

Hayes is a good player but has weaknesses, such as his kicking. Fitzgerald was highly rated at the time and unlucky with injury, Bolton is doing ok, Fossie is not a number three pick though.

Didn't we also take Ablett ahead of Coughlan?

How many players drafted before these guys are washed up hacks who never got a game ?

                          Swings and roundabouts. Massive lottery.

Have a look at the list attached. Will bring back some memories, many not so good But I'm sure every club could do the same, unless you're a Freo or St K where being @@@@ year in year out will evetually pay divendends

I understand whilst we may have had a claim on Longmire he refused point blank to come to us........shame we employed him now we have straightened our act!

                              Sydney sold Longmire for 50K

Sydney were able to claim 2 players from the ACT Lizz. To be fair Hird suffered from hip injuries, and had not been seen much as a player in his teens.

But the best bit, Sydney could not make up their mind between Hird, Ben Aulich and Robert Neill. So in the end they called S&Don (who were shocked) and asked if they would draft Hird (the Sydney people believed he deserved a go). When S&Don said yes Sydney went for Aulich and Neill.

Shane Crawford was in the Sydney zone they just had to list him, but did not believe he would make it.

Sydney ignored Hayes, viewing him more as a HFF, vastly over-rated IMO, is a very wide running half forward like Wayne Campbell more than a gun midfielder. Benefits greatly from having strong ball winners especially Harvey and Powell around him.

Steve can confirm this I believe Sydney had set their targets on Coughlan, but were very surprised that Ablett had slipped through (thought he was top 12 or so), opted for him instead.

This is the way of recruiting, they also picked up Goodes at 43.
You don't ban those who supported your opponent, you make them wallow in their loserdom by covering your victory! You sit them in the front row. You give them a hat! Toby Ziegler
