More news on Magic, LRT, Mathews, and Schneids injuries

Roos sure Magic will be ready
    By Tim Morrissey
    March 11, 2004

MICHAEL O'LOUGHLIN is in doubt for Saturday's official final pre-season hitout against Essendon.

But even with the new season only 16 days away, Paul Roos doesn't have his finger poised over the panic button.

The Sydney coach is adamant the Swans' goal-kicking wizard will play in the club's round one blockbuster away game against triple premiers the Brisbane Lions on March 27.

O'Loughlin is managing a persistent knee tendinitis problem and could go into the new season without having played in a single senior pre-season game for the Swans.

But it doesn't phase Roos if the 27-year-old Sydney star, nicknamed "Magic", only appears for the first time at the Gabba in round one.

If O'Loughlin is ruled out for the Bombers' game in Newcastle this weekend, Roos says the flashy full-forward with the freakish instincts will have a run-out with the Swans' seconds on the following weekend.

"Mick only has to turn up the week before the Brisbane game and he'll get a game (in round one). I can assure you of that," said Roos.

"Look, Mick's fit and there's no problem with his fitness - it's really a matter of when we expose him to a game.

"There's absolutely no doubt at this stage that he'll play round one.

"If he doesn't play this week he'll play (in the seconds) next week, although Mick thinks he's precluded from playing in the seconds.

"(But) we've checked his contract and assured him that's not the case."

Roos is more worried that if O'Loughlin does play in the Essendon game, even for just limited minutes, his competitive nature could jeopardise his comeback.

"That's your greatest fear when you are bring guys back, in that they don't overdo it," added Roos.

"That's very hard to do when you're playing a game of football, so we are yet to decide if Mick is going to play this weekend."

Tough defender Ben Mathews is expected to return to the Swans team this weekend after recovering from ankle surgery in the off-season, as is exciting young gun Lewis Roberts-Thomson, who sustained a calf muscle strain in pre-season.

But Sydney's other rising star, small-forward Adam Schneider, will be out for another week after tearing his hamstring against Carlton in the opening round of the Wizard Cup pre-season competition.

Hmm. I'm 99% sure that the "precluded from the seconds" bit is a joke...

The thing with Magic is, we can play him for 10 minutes of each quarter in a game, and in most quarters he'll contribute a goal in that time.

    That's enough.
