Swans forward Michael O'Laughlin will today play in his first game since tearing a hamstring in the final home-and-away match of last season. He has been plagued by tendonitis in his right knee over the pre-season but will line up in a practice match against Essendon in Newcastle.

Swans football director Andrew Ireland said O'Laughlin was fit to play and expected defender Ben Mathews (ankle) to also play in his first game of the pre-season.

"Both players went really well at training . . . and will play," Ireland said. "The only one who won't be playing is Jason Ball, who pulled up a bit sore from the practice match [against the Kangaroos] last week. He just has a bit of general soreness. He may have a run next weekend in the reserves."

Club doctor Nathan Gibbs said Ball would be rested because of knee tendonitis. The Swans are also without Andrew Schauble, who has a hamstring strain and could be out for up to six weeks.

Today's match begins at 1.30pm at the Number One Oval in Newcastle.

You don't ban those who supported your opponent, you make them wallow in their loserdom by covering your victory! You sit them in the front row. You give them a hat! Toby Ziegler
