The first quarter report from bomberland site:
Essendon has just run out at Newcastle No.l ground and currently warming up for the practice match against Sydney. David Hille, Joel Reynolds, Joe Misiti and Justin Murphy didn't make the trip to NSW today. The four remained in Melbourne to play in the Bendigo Bombers v Williamstown practice match at McHale Stadium.
Draftees Ricky Dyson, Kelper Bradley and Jay Nash get an opportunity today to show the match committee if they warrant senior selection in Round 1 against Port Adelaide. Rookie Adrian Wilson also gets his first opportunity in the senior ranks and will be keen to impress.
Jason Johnson will captain the side today in James Hird and Matthew Lloyd's absence. Mark McVeigh, Ben Haynes and Damian Cupido return to the side from injury. The game will be a good opportunity for them to improve match fitness in preparation for the start of the season.
Match conditions - 22 degrees, slight breeze and relatively humid.
Unlike Essendon, Sydney head into today's game with a close to full strength side. They have a strong team and are only without Adam Schneider, Stephen Doyle, Andrew Schauble and Jason Ball.
Newcastle No.1 Ground is a similar size to the Sydney Cricket Ground, so once possession is gathered in the centre, it is only one kick to the goal square. Sydney made good use of the small ground from the first siren and off to a flying start with two quick goals. They were dominant in the middle with Adam Goodes in the ruck against Essendon youngster Tristan Cartledge.
Essendon settled after the opening minutes and broke through with its first goal after Kepler Bradley marked on the goal line and converted. The Swans were quick to respond when Nick Davis won possession in the centre and kicked long for Sydney?s third goal.
Jason Johnson found the footy in heavy traffic in the middle and booted long to Dean Rioli on the lead. From a set-shot Rioli kicked the Bombers second goal from 30m out. For the remainder of the quarter, the Swans continued to attack. Barry Hall weaved around Mark Bolton on the boundary and centred the ball to Amon Buchanan. Buchanan lined-up from 30m and booted the Swans fifth goal for the term.
Barry Hall was in the thick of the action again and gave the Swans a 25-point lead a quarter time when he booted the team?s sixth goal seconds before the siren. Andrew Welsh is the Bombers? top possession getter for the quarter ? he finished with eight disposals for the term. In his return match Ben Haynes has also found plenty of the ball also notching up eight possessions.
Kepler Bradley has been impressive early. He has worked tirelessly all over the ground, including spending time in the ruck. He finished with seven possessions for the first term.
