I truly understand your feelings - but IMO players come and go, the clubs remains. Our club needs all the support it can get, it doesn't deserved to be punished for alleged actions of individuals , especially considering how much education and time the Swans spend with them.

    Stay loyal!

I've you've got to the end this thread it's probably because you won't stop until you know who the rumour mill says it is. If you must then head to the board Damien mentions -

I don't belive the Essendon board has got it correct or 2GB for that matter. The player involved lets say may have only been related to a 'high profile' player....

Could be guilty by association and both of them might have been there but I am in agreement with DST and it's not what I heard.

That's what I thought as well, but it all seems to be a little confused. If it was the relation of a high profile player who was also aligned to Sydney at one stage, why would a current Swans player (the one that has been named by 2GB) be involved in a payout now?

Whatever's happened, I'm mightily pissed off that the club (and anyone at it) is involved in this at all. In no time at all, one player (and I'm speaking generally here) can take apart all the good work that the players/club do within the community. It doesn't seem fair.

I believe the payout was made not long after the incident occured. This is the sort of rumour-mongering and Chinese whispers I feel will continue until the player is named.

Not sure why you're angry with the club, I don't think they've done anything wrong in this case.

Swans 'had no part in payment'
                By Robert Grant
                March 19, 2004

SYDNEY did not contribute to a payment made to a woman after an alleged rape linked to one of its AFL players, Swans chairman Richard Colless said today.

The unnamed Sydney player was reportedly one of three implicated in the alleged rape of a woman in central Adelaide in 2000.

The allegations were made by a woman who said she received $200,000 in the confidential settlement of a civil law suit.

The other two AFL players were charged with rape but South Australian authorities did not proceed with the case due to doubts about the likelihood of a successful prosecution.

"Contrary to assertions made in some media reports, the incident was fully investigated by the police," Mr Colless said.

"The Swans player concerned was never even interviewed, let alone charged.

"Far from being hushed up the events and investigation were in fact a matter of public record at the time.

"The club is aware that, as reported, a payment was made and accepted without any admission of liability.

"The Sydney Swans did not contribute to any such payment and nor would it in any circumstances.

"The player has steadfastly denied any wrongdoing from the beginning and continues to do so."

Sydney coach Paul Roos today also defended his team.

"At this stage we don't believe anything wrong has been done," Roos said.

"It's early days and I'd like to stress this particular player has never been linked to an assault, hasn't been interviewed by police.

"So I would hate to think that anyone gets unfairly hung by something that at this stage is not even an incident as far as we know."

Roos denied that the Swans were now in a situation similar to that confronting St Kilda which has two players, Stephen Milne and Leigh Montagna, under investigation for rape.

"I'm not sure it's similar at all," Roos said.

"Our guy hasn't been interviewed by police, hasn't been linked to any assault charges so I would think it's completely different.

"I don't know a lot about it at this stage, I've been in meetings all day," he added.

"I've just briefly caught up with a few things and one thing to come out of it is the player has never been interviewed by the police and never been linked to any allegations."

Roos denied that Sydney had paid out any money to a woman for her silence.

"I know the club hasn't paid any money," he said.

"All I can say is, you can take it on face value or not ... we haven't had a player in this incident be interviewed by police.

"If a player hasn't been interviewed by police, hasn't been linked to a crime I guess it's very hard to comment."

Impossible is not a fact, it's an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration, it's a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing!

But why would it ever be made public? If his relative wanted money to pay off the victim, couldn't they do it privately?

I think I worded what I was trying to say poorly - I'm not at all angry at the club, as far as I can tell they haven't done anything wrong. I meant that I am angry that the club has been implicated in something that seems to have nothing to do with them - by the actions of one current/former player (who may not have even done anything wrong).

Fair enough, I must admit I had my heart in my mouth when I heard the words 'sexual assault' and 'Sydney Swans player' used together in the morning news bulletin.

Sorry - didn't realise that article was the product of the official press conference... I thought it seemed more of an off the cuff type thing.

Is there a full transcript anywhere?

That's the kind of words we're all waiting to hear - 'was not involved in incident' and it's good enough for me.
