Roos defends Crouch on Akermanis tag

Roos defends Crouch on Akermanis tag

SYDNEY coach Paul Roos was quick to defend the Swans' top taggers after Brisbane Lions star Jason Akermanis launched an all-out attack on Jared Crouch.

Akermanis, the AFL's master of the outrageous, said the tactics employed by the Swans midfielder were unsporting and bordered on cheating.

But Roos said Akermanis's comments on Crouch's blanketing tactics were way off the mark.

"We always talk to (umpires' boss) Jeff Gieschen and (umpires' coach) Rowan Sawers about our players and they have both been quite complimentary in terms of Jared Crouch's and Brett Kirk's tagging," Roos said.

The latest attempt by Akermanis to pressure the league into making rules against tagging has fallen on deaf ears.

"There's no law against players tagging an opponent," Gieschen said. "But there is a law against players who hold, who block, who scrag to stop their opponent getting to where the football is.

"So unless you are doing those things, (a tagger) is not breaking any laws.

"We cannot award free kicks against players who are very good at applying pressure."

Roos believes Akermanis should keep his mouth shut.

"So many guys in AFL football get tagged and most of them just accept it as part of being a good player," Roos said.

"Most players accept it but obviously Aker can't. You never hear from Michael Voss or Simon Black or Nigel Lappin. (They) get tagged.

"You never hear from Ben Cousins, Nathan Buckley or Paul Williams.

"But you take Aker's remarks with a grain of salt.

"You've got to understand Aker . . . it's really Aker just being Aker."

Speaking on Channel 7's AFL Confidential on Saturday night, Akermanis had once again singled out Crouch, his likely opponent in Round 1, as the worst type of tagger in the competition.

"Pretty much most of the players I play on every week will break the rules and I don't think they are very sportsmanlike at all. They cheat," Akermanis said.

"The worst at it is probably Jared Crouch, I'm looking forward to playing him in Round 1.

"The ball will be right next to you and . . . he will be looking at me, the player."

Akermanis has clearly forgotten Crouch's crucial fourth-quarter goal from 50m on a tough angle at the SCG in Round 7 that sealed Brisbane's first loss of 2003.

Maybe Akers is feeling a bit intimidated - Afterall Jared shut him down everytime last year - and Akers was none too happy about that!

Anyway - bring on Saturday - time to warm the set and cool the tinnies!

To all those travelling to Bris Vegas, have a safe and fantastic trip
cheer loudly and proudly - we will be marching onward to victory!
I used to be indecisive, but now I'm not so sure..................

          Round 1 to Roos.

          And rightly so.

Crouch Jared doesn't want to come out and speak on this, it is not his role.

Jason will now have little to say, as even he realises that getting into a verbal slanging match with a coach is a bad idea.

Hopefully he will be asked to elaborate on the cheating' tag.

I saw the clip of what he said, and the 'cheat' tag was directed at all taggers, not just ours.

Having said all that, I still like Jason.

Do we need more like him (being outspoken) - probably not, could turn into a circus, but e's fun

Aker just doesn't have the mental strength to overcome being tagged.

Kirk s the fairest tagger in the game, should not even be considered a tagger really.
Crouch to me seems just like every other tagger, Kirk is the only different one. I don't see anything wrong with tagging as long as it is within the rules.

To see him really blow up at, the Gabba game I think was amazing, not sure if he'd done that before. Had a big dose of the angry pills that's for sure

This bloke gets tagged pretty much every week and usually comes out on top so I dont know where you pulled that comment from.
Sure our Crouchy has done the job on him a few times - but pretty much no-one else has been as effective as crouchy.
Buckley , Crawford and the like have been tagged out of games and will be in the future - are they mentally weak? I think not.
And these blokes crack the sads as easily as Aker does when they are struggling to break a tag - Crawford has been suspended - and we all saw Buckleys frustrations last year against Sydney even though he did get a bit of the ball.

Cheer Cheer, if you can think back to last year, Roos questioned Akers mental strength the week before he lost the plot against us. I think he is a massive dummy spitter in the style of Richo, not a mentally strong player like Goodes was last year (tackled and thrown to the ground? Just get up and get on with it, it's part of the game).

The continual whining about taggers shows that he is unable to cope. Just get over it and get on with your game!

a more apt example would be the blood smearing incident with ling in 2002

Aker is a dangerous player who creates scoring situations out of nothing. Watching him lose the plot at the Gabba when Crouch kept him out of the game was wonderful. Instead of getting more dangerous Aker just got mad and more ineffectual. Let's hope he does it again this Saturday.

But I think our defensive is really going to miss Schauble against the Lions. I just hope the lack of Brown will balance it.
