New Thread for Rd 1 Team

With today's news we need a new thread to shoot the breeze about the team to be announced tonight....

According to Roosey, McVeigh will definitely play
    James will start at fullback

Kennelly, Schauble, Schneider, Fixter and Nicks are injured
    Dolye is underdone.

    Team could be

    B: ...Crouch.............James...........Mathews (on Voss)
    HB: .Saddington...C. Bolton.........Barry
    C: ..Fosdike.........J. Bolton..........Maxfield (c)
    HF: .Davis................Hall..............Williams
    F: ...Powell..........O'Loughlin........O'Keefe
    R: ...Ball..................Goodes..........Kirk

    Int: Roberts-Thomson, McVeigh, Ablett, Sundqvist

    Em: Bevan, Rogers, Buchanan

    Rationale...

We need the experienced Crouch and Mathews to play on Voss and Aker (assuming they are both in the forward line for the Lions)

Saddo gets his chance in his oficially RWO sanctioned position of half-back-flank.

I reckon that if either Bevan or Rogers were playing then Roosey would have said something when he mentioned McVeigh and James.

Maybe LRT could start in the forward line ahead of Powell, but Powell is in form right at the minute and could be a good one to surprise (especially as he would draw Brisbane's 3rd or 4th tall defender). Sundqvist and Ablett have done enough to get the chance to show they can turn it on in the big show.

I wonder how far away Thewlis, McGlone and Dempster are from selection? Are they pushing for a spot/a viable alternative, or are they still a year away from contention?

    Match-ups.....

    Crouch/Akermanis
    Kirk/Black
    Mathews/Voss
    Williams/Hart
    James/Leppitsch
    Hall/Bradshaw
    J Bolton/Power
    Saddington/Brennan
    C. Bolton/Pike
    Goodes/White
    O'Loughlin/Michael
    Davis/C. Johnson
    O'Keefe/Copeland
    Maxfield/Lappin

I think we're going to win by six goals.

for starters mcglone is an unnominated rookie, there is a spare spot on the list due to macleski's injury, but he needs to be elevated before being considered for selection

the voss-mathews matchup is funny, it would be the walking wounded! they'll have two legs between them. however i think that voss would be too strong for mathews and you cant understimate a half fit voss, he would be much more effective than a half fit mathews... so it might be worth sticking james on him...

    IMO:

    saddington on pike
    bolton on leppitsch
    james on voss
LRT to drop back and cover charman if he moves forward
    crouch on aker

    bradshaw on magic
    michael on hall
    johnson on okeefe
    C'mon Chels!

        12.44 and I'm already wrong!

Bevan is in the team as Defender back-up.

Mmmmm, who's out? Powell, Sundqvist or Ablett?...Ablett I reckon. He's a Bevan size match for one thing. So....

        B: ...Crouch.............James...........Mathews (on Voss)
        HB: .Saddington...C. Bolton.........Barry
        C: ..Fosdike.........J. Bolton..........Maxfield (c)

Is Mathews certain to play?? I thought there was a question mark on his fitness.

Ablett will play according to the Australian.

            McVeigh comes of age
            By Tim Morrissey
            March 25, 2004
EXCITING young Swans midfield prospect Jarrad McVeigh will make his AFL senior debut against the defending triple premiers Brisbane on Saturday.

A tough pre-season campaign paid off for the well-credentialled fifth pick overall from the 2002 national draft with McVeigh putting on 6kg of muscle to ready himself for AFL footy.

And with the retirement of champion midfielder Daryn Cresswell at the end of last season Swans star Barry Hall believes the timing is perfect.

"It's come at the right time," said Hall. "Jarrad is a good young kid, he's earned his spot."

The Swans will also today officially name Luke Ablett and Heath James after impressive pre-season performances.

But Adam Schneider failed to recover from a hamstring strain.

What about if both coaches are foxing? Voss may come out doing handstands (hang on, that'd be better than using his legs . . .), Brown wasn't really suspended and Leppitch is 100% fit; and we show up with Schneider, Doyle, Tiger . . . and Cressa.

Well we always knew Roos was going to play the kids but who knew it'd be this nerve wracking?

Beat the rush - instead of worrying about the season's injuries for the finals, every team seems to be trying to scratch a team together from pre-season injuries.

                See you in Brisvegas.

Personally I'm worried about playing Beven in his first match playing off the half back flank. While I'm sure he can play and can play in the position well, I'm just worried that for a first gamer, its the wrong position to play him in against a team like Brisbane. Still we'll never find out if he can play or not if we keep him under wraps.

Also I'm very worried going in with James, Saddo and Craig Bolton as our tall defenders, though I suppose with Lynch and Brown out it evens out things. Though Bradshaw and Leppisch aren't walk overs down forward either. In any case Rogers must at least be named in the emergancy's just in case the Lions pull a shifty and play Lynch.

Also we must take into account that Voss is likely to play most of the match down forward.

Therefore taking the above into account the Swans side to line up on the weekend at the GABBA will be as follows

B: Jason Saddington Heath James Ben Mathews
HB: Jared Crouch Craig Bolton Leo Barry
C: Jarrad McVeigh Paul Williams Stuart Maxfield
HF: Nick Davis Barry Hall Nic Fosdike
                  F: Michael O'Loughlin Jason Ball Ryan O'Keefe
R: Adam Goodes Brett Kirk Jude Bolton
In: Paul Beven Mark Powell Luke Ablett Lewis Roberts-Thomson
Em: Aaron Rogers Jarrad Sundqvist Stephen Doyle
                  Once was, now elsewhere

He played last weekend, I believe.

Also Robbie.....while we're being pedantic about Ben Matthews, Jarrad Sundquist, Jarrad Crouch, Jared McVeigh, Louis Roberts-Thompson and Michael O'Laughlin - it's Paul Bevan who'll be debuting on Saturday.

The Lions will be taking a big risk by playing Voss, Lynch or Leppitch if they arent at least 90% fit.

The Sydney game plan is run, run, run. A stationary voss in the forward line will just free up one of our men to run through the lines.

Its a pity Kennelly is injured.

James on Bradshaw would be something I want to see. If James is up to the task, it would be great.

Leppisch wont run the game out

Barry on Voss whenever Voss is around the forward line. Voss would kill Mathews on marking strength.

Dont think Roger would add anything. Leppisch speed off the mark is way better than both Roger and Saddo.

Looking at that list settles my nerves. But we have to hope that the Lions forwards don't get much of the ball as I think they remain stronger than our backs. Our powerhouse in the middle of the ground is very reassuring. I think LRT and Doyle may get a fair bit of time on the field and look forward to that.

We're underdone; they're overdone. Anything is possible.
