PUT it down to the luck of the Irish. The Sydney Swans received good new yesterday after dashing halfback flank Tadhg Kennelly was ruled a chance to play next week after undergoing arthroscopic surgery.
Swans club doctor Nathan Gibbs said Kennelly could be returning for the Swans first home game of 2004 against Fremantle at the SCG on Sunday week.
"I would put Tadhg down for a chance next week," said Dr Gibbs.
"Right now he would be a 20 per cent chance to play in 10 days if all goes well but the week after I'd say Tadhg is an 80 per cent chance to play."
It was the best possible news for the club going into tomorrow night's blockbuster season opener against triple premiers Brisbane at the Gabba.
Especially for Stuart Maxfield who is now in danger of earning the nickname of "Captain Calamity".
It was Maxfield's hit on the Irish-born star at Wednesday's training session that caused Kennelly to tear the meniscus cartilage in his left knee. Last season Maxfield accidentally took out young Sydney midfielder Ryan O'Keefe in a training mishap three days before the Swans' qualifying final against Port Adelaide.
Gibbs reckons if you are going to sustain a knee injury this is the one to have.
"There was a torn medial meniscus cartilage which was locking the knee but everything else was perfect," said Gibbs.
