    Aftermatch Functions

    Hi all,

With the first game in Sydney just over a week away, I would like to get some feedback in regard to the aftermatch functions this year, I have been given the go ahead to host them again so am looking for some new things to do. I would like some ideas on what people would like to see there and whether to continue with the Musical challenge that I have been doing the past 2 years. I would also like some feedback on things that could be done differently or things that people don't like. I want to make it interesting and fun for everyone and to make sure all the supporters enjoy coming back for the Aftermatch.

    Thanks, Luffy

Luffy - it's good to hear that you'll be up there again.

I don't mind the musical bits too much, just as long as they don't turn the volume up so far that you can't hear yourself think!

The only suggestion I could make would be to maybe get a bit more footy content into the aftermatch functions. After all, we go to the footy for the footy! One thing I would like to see is an update on the reserves. Maybe it might be an idea to grab one of the Happy Little Raffle Ticket Sellers for a short interview and recap of the day's reserves results while waiting for the senior players.

No word on getting any sort of suitable venue out at Homebush? It seems like a shame not to have aftermatch functions at the bigger games / finals.

177th Senior AFL Match - Round 4, 2009 - Sydney vs Carlton, SCG. This is obviously out of date. I suppose I'll update it once I could be bothered sitting down with the fixture and working it out....

Troy, the only time I've been able to go to one of your AM's was the Kelly/Dunkley/Roos match at Stade Oz in 2002... so that's probably not the best example to use.

But I think that perhaps the Aftermatch can be best used as a tool for turning casual interest in the Swans as an 'event' into core support for the Swans and the code in general. Therefore, the focus should be less on general entertainment and more on football. Interviews, perhaps if there's televisions in the venue they could be tuned into other matches... talk about local footy... use them as a means of getting more people more involved.

I would love to see a social club type situation where the whole team comes, has some drinks and then individual awards are announced for the game. Even if this was to cost a small fee it would be ok and probably encourage more people.

I remember back in the 90's West Coast doing exactly this (not sure if they still do) and it was a huge success.

The SCG has plenty of function rooms to enable such a social club and give the chance for fans to hear how the players felt about the game.

I absolutely agree with Captain, but with the F&L, sponsorship commitments and the chairman's aftermatch et al, the players are probably stretched too thin and the function room in the MA Noble stand is hardly suitable for a mingle. It's very event-specific.

The young players who sell the raffle tickets are coordinated by the Redbacks. This raises money for the Club - last years proceeds bought some software to help with player assessments. I would like to see the young guys get acknowledged - maybe introduce them on stage and get them to say a few words. Then it might be easier to get people to talk to them. They need to feel part of the Club too and talking to the members is a good thing for them. However, most members don't know who the young guys are, so I'd like to see them introduced.

The Dockers and the Eagles both still have aftermatch funcations were awards for Bog and novelty awards are awarded. Carl Langdon does the Eagles and Our own Scott Waters (by way of trade) for the Dockers.

Luffy, the after match for me should/could mostly be an opportunity to get some insight into the particular game just played and where the the team is presently at. Player interviews are great and if number could be increased, all the better. I particularly enjoy the coaching staff getting up and would love them playing a bigger role if that's possible. As others have said - it's all about the football.
Totally agree with Bron about getting the youngsters up to be introduced - if they're not playing in the seniors many don't know who they are but they should - they are our future!
Can't say I pay too much attention to the prelim stuff, but some of those contenstants on the musical challenge are hard to ignore! Wonder if some of the incessant talkers might decide to go elsewhere if the format was totally football?
See you in 9 sleeps and thanks for the juice on your insightful words to Plugger in 96 - priceless.
Patterns emerge, but do they mean anything? No.

Thanks so much to those that have replied, please keep them coming. The idea of interviewing the reserve grade players is a good idea and I will do that next week. I agree that most want to hear about football and I will try and do that but I need to enertain for up to an hour before the players from the game come up for their interview so it is hard to stand up there talking for that long that is why I need to try and have some fun and entertain while waiting. A couple have suggested that all the players come up and mingle with the supporters, I think that this would be fantastic if it could happen but unfortunately the players have other committments after the game and are unable to do this, a few go to the Fox and Lion so you could see them there. I was thinking of a mix of Footy trivia and the musical challenge together, it seems to have worked in the past and is always good for a laugh but I wont do it if nobody wants it.
Anyway more feedback please so I can make sure that the Aftermatch functions are enjoyable for everyone.
                  Thanks

Maybe a 5-10 minute talk on the game by a regular 'panel' of people (not sure how the panel would be chosen) on the game, the highs and the lows of the Swans game and the game of the opposition.

But why do the players have other commitments? Shouldn't their main commitment be to the fans and sponsors?

An aftermatch function with ALL the players would allow the fans to mingle with them and awards to be presented. Sponsors could be involved by having awards named after them (the QBE best mark award for example), their logos everywhere and even sponsor the whole function (the Optus after match).

It is simply unacceptable that a club in times where supporters are like gold just don't want to put a decent after match in place. The excuse that players go to the Fox & Lion is a good example. Do they need to go there? Is it part of a sponsorship deal? If so why not hold the aftermatch at a function room at the Fox & Lion? What is it achieving?

I haven't heard a single argument of the reasons why we can't have a proper aftermatch.

Luffy, start by keeping the drunkards out!!! (*hic*). There are lots of kids in the audience and some of the behaviour on stage has not been in the best taste. (*hic*)... But besides that, it might be corny, but I liked the sing alongs when jemma (or someone else) sings the old football songs...you know...got my scarf, etc...and cheer cheer of course!!! They seemed to be relegated a bit last season.
Id also like to think that occasionally, say once a year, Colless or another board member might like to actually come along and talk to the members who fork out dough year in year out to follow the club. I don't think Ive ever seen a swannie " big nob" at an aftermatch.
I'd also love to have a BOG vote, and even a fun, clanger of the day award....
"Davis...Davis has kicked 2...he snaps from 40...dont tell me, dont tell me, hes kicked a goal....unbelievable stuff from Nick Davis, can you believe this, he's kicked 3 final quarter goals and Swans are within 3 points..."

                              Hi Luffy!
I don't particularly like the drunks that get up on stage. It may be funny for the first couple of minutes, but it soon gets boring.

I like the footy trivia- that's always good.

Is it possible to get a feed from the press confrence after the game with Roos? We had it a couple of times last year (I think...)

I like when the players come up for a couple of questions when they have time.

That's all I can really think of at the moment.

You're doing a terrific job with the AM.
