A brave Swans side showed it will again be a premiership force in 2004 with a sensational first-up performance last night, losing a cliffhanger against triple premiers Brisbane.

Sydney were the better side for most of the first half, and led by three goals at half-time, but the Lions came over the top of them in the third term to lead by eight points at the last change.

In a seesawing high-intensity final term the lead changed six times before the home side secured the two-point win.

Jason Ball missed a very gettable goal in the dying minutes from a set shot after taking a strong mark 35 metres out.

The miss delivered the Swans a bitter pill on top of their preliminary final loss to the Lions last year.

A Blake Caracella goal in the 25th minute proved the difference between the two sides, who are developing a formidable rivalry.

Brisbane's confidence grew as the game wore on and the Swans' poor disposal in the third term cost them.

The Swans opened the game with great impetus via sharpshooter Nick Davis, who kicked three goals in the first quarter and four for the first half, before being taken off with a groin injury incurred after kicking his fourth major. He didn't return to the game.

Sydney's patience with the football was again a feature of their play.

The three premiership flags unfurled before the game were like red rags to the Sydney bull early on, and the visitors started the season as if there hadn't been a break since the last one.

They dominated much of the first half thanks to a red-hot performance from evergreen midfielder Paul Williams.

The Swans led by 18 points at the first break, and by 19 at the main change. But the Lions showed once again why they are such a great side, and had turned the deficit around at three-quarter time to lead by a point thanks to a late behind from Jared Brennan that put them ahead for the first time.

Davis's absence had a telling effect on Sydney, for whom

both Paul Bevan and Jarrad McVeigh had strong debuts.

The Swans midfield dominated their more illustrious rivals for most of the first quarter as Williams gathered 10 possessions, and Davis benefited most.

The former Magpie, who kicked 32 goals last year, scored three times in the opening term to help the visitors to an 18-point quarter-time lead, 4.3 (27) to 1.3 (9).

Davis showed he had retained his accuracy of last year by adding another midway through the second term, but hurt his groin in the process.

After the stinging criticism from Jason Akermanis of his arch foe Jared Crouch during the week, Lions coach Leigh Matthews tried to match Akermanis against Sydney captain Stuart Maxfield, but that experiment only lasted the opening five minutes of the game.

Tagger Crouch was heavily involved in the first half and was booed heavily by the near sell-out crowd every time he touched the ball.

The home side kicked the first two goals of the second quarter through Justin Leppitsch and Martin Pike before Williams landed a booming goal from 65 metres out on the fly.

Then, after a combination of handballs across the half-forward line, Davis kicked his fourth. A behind a minute later stretched Sydney's lead to 21 points, the greatest margin of the first half.

Time-on in the second term brought a shoot-out between the keen rivals as the premiers picked up their intensity. Simon Black goaled for the Lions in the 22nd minute, before a cool McVeigh kicked his first AFL goal on his debut.

Fellow boom youngster Brennan then replied before Barry Hall kicked his first goal after two previous minor scores and Sydney led 8.7 (55) to 5.6 (36) at half-time.

    Lions beats Swans in thriller

    March 28, 2004
THE Sydney Swans' new season started last night the same way 2003 ended, with the side losing an epic battle to perhaps the greatest team in the modern era.

Reigning triple premiers the Brisbane Lions again showed why they are the AFL's benchmark team.

Last season, on their way to their third consecutive flag, the Lions ensured Sydney's fairytale ride in 2003 came to an abrupt halt with an awe-inspiring fourth quarter to win their preliminary final by 44 points.

However, last night Sydney and Brisbane went goal for goal in a heart-stopping final quarter.

As the final minutes counted down, Michael O'Loughlin put the Swans in front by six points with his first goal, before Sydney conceded two behinds.

Blake Caracella then kicked the match-winner from 40m on the run to have the 34,028 crowd on their feet.

The Swans had one last crack when Jason Ball marked over the pack in front of the posts 40 metres out.

However, there weren't to be any last-gasp heroics as Ball's shot drifted right, leaving the champs to savour a thrilling two-point victory.

It was a bitter way to lose but despite all that the Swans took a giant step towards proving wrong the critics who said the team's stunning on-field turnaround in 2003 was a flash in the pan.

"The guys were fantastic. I can't be critical at all of anyone tonight," Swans coach Paul Roos said.

"It was a tough and hard battle. In the end it came down to a kick. It didn't go our way, but that's football.

"To come that close to the reigning premiers on their ground in the first game of the season was a tremendous effort. I was really proud of the guys."

The Swans' game plan developed some cracks in the third quarter, and their confidence began to ebb away as the Lions exploited Sydney's defence in the backline.

After an unusually quiet first half, Lions midfielder Jason Akermanis became involved, kicking a brilliant goal on the run and making dangerous use of the ball.

Brisbane forward Martin Pike gave Jason Saddington nightmares by out-smarting and out-hustling the key Swans defender for his second goal.

Leo Barry was moved on to Pike in an attempt reduce the damage.

With the Lions' midfield winning the battle for the footy, Sydney's forward line received only limited opportunities.

But they failed to convert them, kicking just four behinds to Brisbane's 3.6 for the period as the Lions grabbed a hard-fought 8.12 (60) to 8.11 (59) lead heading into the final break.

The Swans' preparation for the game wasn't ideal with key defenders Andrew Schauble (hamstring) and Tadhg Kennelly (knee) and exciting young forward Adam Schneider (hamstring) missing from the line-up.

A backline reshuffle saw Heath James go to fullback and Ben Mathews replace Kennelly on the halfback flank.

The Lions were also forced to make a last-minute change when veteran full forward Alastair Lynch failed to overcome a thigh injury, with promising Jared Brennan, 19, promoted from the emergency list.

Without Lynch the Lions moved Daniel Bradshaw into the goal square but most of the action was at the other end where Swans forward Nick Davis caused all sorts of headaches, kicking the first three goals of the game.

Davis was in superb touch and never looked like missing as Sydney won the honours in a tense first-term battle to lead 4.3 (27) to 1.9 (9) at the break.

In the second quarter the momentum started to swing towards Brisbane as they closed the gap to eight, thanks to two quick goals.

However, a stunning 60-metre bomb on the run by veteran Swans half-forward Paul Williams midway through the period gave Sydney a shot of confidence.

Minutes later Davis provided more inspiration when he evaded a defender to drill a 30-metre snap shot for his fourth goal.

However, it came at a price as Davis limped off the field nursing a corked right hip and didn't return.

Bit unfair pointing the finger at Ball - yes he could have won it but many missed shots early cost us.

Should have been further ahead given dominant first half

Swans narrowly lose opening night epic
        12:46:08 AM Sun 28 March, 2004

        Sportal/exclusive to sydneyswans.com.au
Sydney coach Paul Roos refused to blame Jason Ball?s missed goal for his side?s nail-biting two-point loss to Brisbane at the Gabba.

Ball had a chance to win the game after taking a sensational mark in the dying seconds, but skewed his attempt wide and handed the Lions a 11.14 (80) to 11.12 (78) win.

Roos offered much-needed support to a distraught Ball in the Swans? shed after the game, saying the loss couldn?t be attributed to a single factor.

?I told him to forget it, there?s no point dwelling on it,? Roos said.

?It would have been a fairytale for him - 150 games taking the mark - I thought the mark was outstanding.

?You just have to forget those things, they happen in footy. Bally didn?t go out to try and miss it. He?s just got to forget about it and move on.?

Sydney got off to a flying start with three early goals to Nick Davis stunning the sold-out Gabba crowd.

Davis was in vintage touch for the Swans in the first half, helping the visitors to a 19-point halftime advantage with his fourth goal before a hip injury prematurely ended the 23-year-old?s night.

Roos acknowledged the loss of Davis was a major blow to his side?s hopes of an upset win.

?You can say he was in reasonable touch when he left the game so it (the injury) did hurt us there?s no doubt about that,? he said.

Sydney faltered after the break and allowed the Lions to run away with a three goal-to-nil third term.

Down by just one point at the start of the final quarter, Adam Goodes kicked the Swans back into the lead with his sole major of the night.

The lead changed five times throughout the see-sawing period before Blake Caracella?s goal with five minutes remaining gave Brisbane the lead for the final time.

I really feel sorry for Jason.

The mark was great, but alas...

Overall though I wasn't too disappointed with the team's performance.
As Leigh Matthews noted after the game, it could have easily been them licking their wounds.

I thought the game was very good. I saw two young players - standing up and playing like they had been playing senior footy for ages.
Congratulations to Paul and Jarrad - wow we have some young talent and the game of LRT, James etc made me feel very positive about the upcoming season.

Add Schneider and Schauble and wow.

Radio comments yesterday said Maxfield is super fit and going to be in for a great year.

The season has begun, the bad part is we didn't come away with the four points - but we came away with a sense and feeling of and exciting and hopefully great year to come.
                Love those Swans

Cressa?? Isn't it time to move on? We could have used Kell too - and it would have been handy having Plugger in the goal square.

I must have missed something last night - I saw a talented team blooding new players and almost beating the team that is the benchmark for the competition. Why lament for players from the past?

Sorry if I sounded the heavy. I was so enthused at the end of the game last night that I even found myself declaring that the game was so good I hardly cared that we lost! I remember telling a Lions supporter that they'd just seen a preview of this year's Grand Final.

Still, we don't have the points and they do. Please don't let us go down to Freo - another good team that plays like we do but with a giant ruckman!

Back on the topic of this thread - all our quality players took turns missing goals that were there for the taking last night. We've come to expect accuracy - and we're either going to have to get the ball in the 50 as much as other teams do or kick more accurately than we did on Saturday night.

                        Yeah, definitely harsh blaming bally.

After I got over the disappointment of the close loss (took me about 2 minutes, or the time it took for a stray footy to land directly on robbie's head!), I realised that I'd just seen a good competitive game of footy. There's no shame losing to Brisbane. I was rapt in the debuts of McVeigh and Bevan - and Powell and James did alright too!

Anyone could have won that game. I'm not happy that it wasn't us, but I reckon we'll do ok this year.

177th Senior AFL Match - Round 4, 2009 - Sydney vs Carlton, SCG. This is obviously out of date. I suppose I'll update it once I could be bothered sitting down with the fixture and working it out....

I'm glad someone mentioned Bevan. I though we looked pretty good through the mid field. 12 possessions and 6 marks is not a bad start.

I'm also glad James got over his first half fumble from the kick out and played well for the rest of the game.

Some of the delivery into the forward 50 was appalling. I'm sure this will be a focus of training over the next week...

It was a game which showed some great signs, especially for the young blokes like bevan and mcveigh. The only thing that killed it i guess is the fact that we were so close to getting the 4 points.

I didnt expect jason to miss the shot but these things happen and it only gets worse if you dwell on it. But he has done so much for the club that no one can say a bad word about him.
