This is not about one game of the season - this is about his performances over the last 2 years. I know I'm not alone in feeling this frustration, and the two sides of the argument with Saddo tend to be either "he's awful" or "give him a chance". It's very rare anyone talks about a positive contribution he makes, unlike practically every other player in the team...

He is not, and never will be a key defender and I cannot understand why Roos plays him there, though he obviously has his reasons. As a squad player with the occassional run on the back flank he may have his uses - but to be quite frank I've given up on him.

I have absolutely nothing against the boy personally and wish him no ill - in fact I truly hope he shoves my words down my throat - but I won't be holding my breath...
    Regards,

    Boro Boy

Although it was a disappointing game for Saddo, he did show some good hints of talent. He took some good marks when they were coming out of defence.

We could try him in the forward line because he does present a marking option, but yes, we do have enough quality forwards. But I think we go back to the problem we had before, that we dont have enough defenders.

A skinny guy like him will just have to do...

Footy is a weird game, just when you think you're matching up on a key forward, you get an ageing flanker with loads of smarts and pace to burn.

Pikey would not have been what Saddo expected but getting caught so far behind frustrated me at times.

If Saddo is playing out of position, then we really need to get him in position and quick or we will be ruined pretty quick because we don't have the blanket midfield protection to cover him.

We'd better find his position soon.

One of his problems is that he is not that quick. He doesn't seem to keep up with his man.

He doesn't really play close checking defence.

He doesn't have the body strength to match it man-on-man, as aptly demonstrated against Pike.

He needs a clear run at the ball, however lacks judgement, as he demonstrated against Keating.

So if he's not strong enough to play on a key forward and not quick enough to play on a small forward, what do we do with him? Put him on their hack forward?

Why NOT? There are plenty of them around. Nathan Thompson would be the one Saddo could have for breakfast every single time.

Ah, this would be the Nathan Thompson who averages nearly 3 goals a game against us...

From where I was sitting Saddo didn't do a thing wrong. Of course he is undersized as a key position player, but it doesn't change the fact he can still be very handy down back when Schauble comes back. He and James should become our back pockets, with Schauble at FB and Craig Bolton at CHB.

Didn't do a thing wrong? Pike comfortably beat him, while he foolishly tried to outmark Keating from behind.

If he and James are our back pockets, who will pick up the small forward pockets?

The only thing I can see him useful for is as HBF, picking up one of the taller opposition flankers. The key thing will be though, can he deliver the same drive from the back flank, which is so important to us, as we currently get.

Totally agree. There is a place for Saddo somewhere, just not in a key position, on a strong forward or on a small forward!

Maybe he could make the 'loose man in defence' an actual position and be like a sweeper across half back.

Either way, our backline is starting to look very nice with the emergence of James:

                        Crouch James Saddington
                        Bolton Schauble Barry

(with Kennelly to play on the wing)

hear here... maxfield should be dropped to the reserves.. hes obviously not the player he was 2 or 3 years ago. He seems to have dropped a yard in pace, and his usually penetrating kicks are no where to be seen. Captain or not, hes got to make way for our up and coming youngsters.

And since out defense is rock solid and stable at the moment, now is the best time to introduce another rookie in there.

Ok, but really, I can understand why some of you guys are frustrated with Saddo. However, I still think he has got a few bad games in him yet until we decide hes not good enough.

If Roos has faith in him, who are we to say otherwise?

I watched all of the game and if you think Saddo played well, then you're probably in a deluded minority.

Maxfield also didn't play well, as I've already said, however he hasn't been struggling to find form to the same extent as Saddington.

Robbie I agree with your structural assessment, however I must disagree with your view on Sadds Saturday night.

He piked (unfortunate pun!) in quiteva few contests where there was imminent physical danger, he took one very good mark, but too often he is brushed aside, and not just by the Brown/Carey/Lynch types but smaller types too. After 120 odd games he is no rookie!

He is good kick and a great long handballer, but really he is a Kenneally without the pace NOT a Dunkley. He is a half back flanker not a full back and not a CHB and I think we just have to accept that, and maybe the coaching staff too!
