    Brisbane 11.14 (80) Sydney 11.12 (78)

It was so nearly a football fairytale. The kind of story Jason Ball could have told in years to come about how, in his 150th game, he took a fabulous mark and kicked a 35-metre goal to win the match in the dying moments and help his side claim retribution over reigning premiers Brisbane.

But history shows the kick went to the right for a point. Ball, who sat with his head in his hands in the Swans dressing rooms following the loss, declined to talk about the moment on the night. Yesterday, the ruckman, returning from a shoulder injury, still could not utter a single word about the disappointing kick.

But Sydney coach Paul Roos was much more positive about the disappointment of Ball's miss and the Swans' tough two-point loss.

"I just told him to forget it," Roos said. "There's no point in dwelling on it. It would have been a fairytale for him . . . I thought the mark was outstanding, I don't know where he came from. It was a bloody good mark. You've just got to forget those things. They happen in footy.

"I was just rapt with the guys and how hard they played. It was a fantastic contest . . . I enjoyed the way the guys battled a great team. There were a lot of positives."

The Swans had, again, tested Brisbane and for nearly three quarters of the match defiantly held the lead. Young players in defender Paul Bevan and Jarrad McVeigh showed poise and promise and senior players, such as Paul Williams and captain Stuart Maxfield, were still finding and winning the football.

Leo Barry was still courageously leaping, taking a crowd-wowing acrobatic mark in the back line in the second quarter. And Adam Goodes was still able to dominate.

The confidence was there, the skills were sharp and the effort was "fantastic". In short, the Swans looked good. But things did go wrong.

Nick Davis, who was in stunning form in the opening half, limped off the ground with a hip-flexor muscle tear late in the second quarter.

As the talented forward kicked his fourth to give the Swans 6.6 (42) to Brisbane's 3.4 (22), he felt the tear. Club doctor Nathan Gibbs said Davis would have an MRI scan today to determine the extent of the damage.

"I would guess he would have to be out for a few weeks at this stage," Gibbs said.

The first half was like a game of professional kick to kick, the Swans chipping it around short, maintaining possession and denying Brisbane the opportunity to build any momentum. Sydney held the lead for the first half, going into the half-time break with the scores at 8.7 (55) to 5.6 (36).

But, in the second half, Brisbane's midfield, led by Simon Black, started to fire. And, no matter how dodgy his knee was, Michael Voss was still incredibly impressive with 21 touches. Justin Leppitsch and Martin Pike (three goals) were powerful up forward, and Lions defender Mal Michael played well on Barry Hall.

Jason Akermanis, one of the Lions' best, emerged with a brilliant goal and stack of possessions to his name. His duel with Swans tagger Jared Crouch was entertaining, and honours were fairly even.

Sydney were held goalless in the third quarter. A combination of messy supply to their talented forward combination of Michael O'Loughlin and Hall and Brisbane's flooding halted their momentum.

"Their midfielders push back very hard and at times they have 14, 15 [players] inside the forward 50 . . . a lot of times it's hard to find space," Roos said.

"The third quarter was when we didn't use the ball. That's when they rebounded quite a few. I don't know how many goals were turnovers but there was quite a few."

The Lions went into the final break with a lead of just one point, with the scores at 8.11. (59) to 8.12 (60).

With five minutes to go, the Swans were in front by three. But as the game time trickled away, so did Sydney's opportunities and Blake Caracella slotted through a major to take Brisbane into the lead.

Then came the flying mark from Ball. But his boot let him down and the kick sailed wide, along with what would have been a famous win.

    Ball still deflated

    By TIM MORRISSEY

    March 29, 2004

THE day after the dust had settled on the Sydney Swans' heart-breaking loss to the Brisbane Lions, Jason Ball still wasn't talking about "that kick".

But one of Ball's more flamboyant Swans teammates, Nick Davis, said that, if he had taken the set shot 35 metres out directly in front of goal to win the game, he would have buried the reigning triple premiers at the Gabba.

"Yeah, I would have kicked it," Davis said.

"I was pretty confident though Bally was going to kick that goal. He didn't, it's history now so we move on to next week."

Davis played an instrumental role in the Swans' confident start on Saturday night, kicking four goals including three in the first quarter.

But the talented forward was forced off the ground midway through the second term with a torn right hip flexor muscle injury, which is likely to sideline Davis for the next two to three weeks. That means he will miss the Swans' first home game of the new season against Fremantle at the SCG on Sunday.

"Watching the lead dwindling away was a bit hard but the boys fought it out right to the finish and you couldn't ask for anything more," said Davis, who will have an MRI scan today to determine the extent of the injury.

The Swans clearly missed Davis as a potent scoring option in the second half but despite everything they still should have won their blockbuster season opener.

Instead Ball blew a fairytale finish to his 150th AFL game.

Ball had done all the hard work by brilliantly marking Jared Crouch's desperate penetrating kick with 50 seconds remaining, with Brisbane grimly hanging to an 11.14 (80) to 11.11 (77) lead.

But Ball's set shot from 35 metres out right in front was a shocker, coming off the side of his right boot to just sneak inside the point post, allowing the Lions to escape with a two-point victory.

The enormity of Ball's blunder was not lost on the former West Coast Eagles' leading goalkicker in 1995, who was gutted in the rooms beneath the "Gabbattoir".

When Ball was approached by a Swans official and asked if he could talk to the awaiting media, his blunt response was, "F... off".

Ball's teammates also felt his pain and shared some of the blame for the loss.

"There's not much you can say really, all you can do is walk over and give him a pat on the back," Swans captain Stuart Maxfield said. "He's a strong character, Jason, so I'm sure he'll get over it."

Maxfield pointed out that there were a lot of "what ifs" on Saturday night, especially in the third quarter when the Swans' accuracy at goal let them down. They kicked just four behinds to Brisbane's three goals six behinds.

Swans coach Paul Roos said: "There were a lot of mistakes made by other players from both sides during the game and it just so happens Jason's was right at the end.

"I just said to Jason, 'forget it, move on and not let it worry you'," he added.

It was so nearly a football fairytale. Jason Ball, in his 150th game, took a screamer in the dying moments and just had to kick accurately to win the match and help his side claim retribution over the reigning premier. But the kick went to the right, for a behind.

After the match, Ball sat with his head in his hands in the rooms and declined to talk. Yesterday, he still could not utter a word about the poor kick that meant Sydney lost by two points.

But Swans coach Paul Roos was positive about the whole gut-churning disappointment of what might have been.

"I just told him to forget it," Roos said. "There's no point in dwelling on it. It would have been a fairytale for him . . . I thought the mark was outstanding, I don't know where he came from. It was a bloody good mark. You've just got to forget those things. They happen in footy.

Young players in defender Paul Bevan and Jarrad McVeigh showed poise and promise and senior players, such as Paul Williams and captain Stuart Maxfield, were finding and winning the football.

The Lions were hampered by the absence of regular key forwards Jonathan Brown (suspended) and Alastair Lynch (late withdrawal), meaning coach Leigh Matthews repeatedly tweaked his forward structure .

"You have your two main key forwards missing, you have got to manufacture and make do," said Matthews, who said the Swans looked "better than us" and "more match prepared", and that in the first half, his side didn't seem ready to play at the necessary tempo.

Lions veteran Shaun Hart, though, said the Sydney tactics to slow the game had been "very frustrating" and "not an enjoyable way to play football", but he was readying himself for more.

"It almost worked for them tonight and we just need to keep making plans for them next time. I imagine they'll try the same things next time, and probably against most teams," said Hart. "They are one of the best sides in the league - if not the best side - at getting men back behind the ball and really clogging up their back half of the ground."

This from a team who had their entire side in their defensive half against us?!?!

You know... for a while the Brians were still a likable side, dominant or not.

With Aker running his mouth, with Lynch getting free kicks left, right and centre, the Scotts being thugs, Voss starting to do more of the same, and generally decent blokes like Shaun Hart starting to say the most hypocritical of things... I'm starting to think of them as more like Collingwood than Sydney...

                Spot on Rizzo.

If we were seen as neville's, these things would not be spoken about. Hart's comments are just so ridiculous considering the Brians were the absolute flood masters on the night.

Aker shooting his mouth off is a given, as is the Cray brothers and co. putting on the biff when things are not going their way. Not surprising when you consider as great a player as Mathews was, he was one filthy mongrel as well.

Always bemuses me when one B.Hall gets in these shirt pulling contests. The oppo guys like Michael and co. give soooo much cheek on the field where Barry has his hands tied. @@@@ I'd love to see these peanuts get into a ring with him.

The worst was last year in the game at the Gabba, when that little sniper Chris Johnson had a go at Bazza.

How the umps don't see it amazes me, and these gutless germs know that if Bazza was to let go with a few, their careers as humans would be over

Brisbane are unsportsmanlike thugs who will do anything to win. Unfortunately they will get a lot of help this year from the media, tipsters, commentators etc who all want them to win again to create history.
