    Roos defends tactics

Sydney Swans Paul Roos makes no apologies for his sides? tactics in the aftermath of their two-point loss against the Brisbane Lions last Saturday night.

The Gabba crowd booed the visitors for undertaking a high-possession, short-kicking tactic to starve the defending premiers of the ball and slow down play.

While unpopular, the tactic - employed successfully against Brisbane in both home-and-away victories last season - nearly gave them another four points.

?The reason we played the way we did is basically because Brisbane play the way do,? Roos said.

?Brisbane floods; whether you call them negative tactics that is the way Brisbane play their football they get a lot of numbers back and rely on teams making mistakes.

?They are a terrific team so it is not a criticism. I don?t think you should criticise Brisbane for flooding in the back half. They have won three flags and that is the way they play their football.?

Sydney led by 19 points at the main break - amassing nearly 50 more possessions - but fell away from its game plan in the third term where the home side out-scored them by 20 points.

?The times we did go in long and kicked it straight down was in the third quarter so you just cannot kick it to a contest against Brisbane because they do get numbers back.

?Sometimes they have 14 or 15 players inside 50m so we are not going to kick straight down their throat.

?So in terms of tactics I think that is what Brisbane want you to do so that is probably where the criticism has come from.?

Roos does not expect Sydney to adopt a similar style this weekend against Fremantle as the Dockers ?try to play the way the opposition will allow (us) to play.?

You don't ban those who supported your opponent, you make them wallow in their loserdom by covering your victory! You sit them in the front row. You give them a hat! Toby Ziegler

we dominated the first half, yet were only 3 goals up at 1/2 time - this lead was easily lost with one average/poor quarter.

we then had an even last quarter... so overall we were the best team on the night given our first half domination.

we kicked a measly 11 goals for the match with a potent forward line including Hall, Ball, O'Loughlin and Davis.

    considering all of this...

there IS a problem when you have the better of another team for the majority of the match and only kick 11 goals, AND LOSE!
i'm a bit concerned that Roos will not admit this.

i would suggest we re-think the strategy of stop-start to the forward line and MIX this with long kicks to the top of the square (danger zone where you are a 50/50 chance to kick a score) where Hall and Ball are waiting to mark, and Davis, O'Loughlin, Schneider, O'Keefe, etc are waiting to crum. obviously you also mix this with kicks to clear, leading players.

I suggest that there are greater percentages in this than solely relying on 8-10 pin-point short passes to closely contested marks once you go forward of centre.

    your thoughts?
"As a player he simply should not have been able to do the things he did. Leo was a 185cm, 88kg full-back and played on some of the biggest, fastest and best full-forwards of all time, and constantly beat them." Roos.
Leo Barry? you star! We'll miss ya, ''Leapin''.
