OK, so I am going down to the MCG for the Ess V Swans game May 1st. I have never been to the MCG before and was wondering what is a good place to sit is (will have the family with me) and what is the pricing like and anything else one should know abot the MCG (like you can't get full strength beer there).

The great southern stand seems to be popular with SS fans.
http://www.mcg.org.au/seating/seatingplan.gif I think the majority of them sit in line with Light Tower 3.(Gate 7).
I hope this helps.
PS. not sure about the beer, It may only be light.
I sit in the MCC reserve, where I can get a full strength, but can't drink it in my seat, have to go to the bar. -
I'll be down there as well. Most of the Swans fans tend to look for the Cheer Squad, as that way we are safer and LOUDER in numbers. From what i have heard that because the MCG Members are now sitting behind the right of screen goals, the Swans Melbourne Cheer Squad (and an increasing number of northern interlopers) will be in their position on the half forward line in the Olympic Stand. Not the best position, and all the rows of seats on this annoying gradiant. But if you want to be among friend and just rock up on the day, that is the thing to do.
You'll find going to the footy in Melbourne considerably cheaper than it is up here.

PS:- Don't forget the after-match too. There is a good old clique who now have pizza after the game in South Melbourne somewhere. We reached 31 for the Melbourne game."Never ever ever state that Sydney is gone. They are like cockroaches in the aftermath of a nuclear war"

I presume there will be the first after match at the Lakes Oval, that might be worth it subject to here you are staying.Sports do not build character. They reveal it....Heywood Broun

You should be ok with getting an unbreserved seat if you rock up when we do.

You are more than welcome to come out with the banner with everyone; for some reason I seem to enjoy it in Melbourne heaps more than up here (no stress, I guess). I have generally seen you in black pants in any case. So you'll no doubtedly get 'encouraged' by the infectiously persuasive Denise, Cheer Squad manager in Melbourne to come out in any case.
However Sunday in Canberra is where it will be all hands on deck for us in the Sydney-based squad. We will be very short on numbers, so if any RedandWhiteonliners want to come on the field with us, just come around to the Cheer Squad area about 30 minutes before the match. Wearing black pants will far increase your chances of getting on as well. (So that means to bring them, Go Swannies, Ok!)

PS:- Is your sister going to be there to help us this Sunday?"Never ever ever state that Sydney is gone. They are like cockroaches in the aftermath of a nuclear war"

Hopefully there will be 60000 at the match because the Auskick clinic that I run has been allocated a grid match at half time and yours truly gets to umpire. Can you believe it. After dipping out for 2 years we strike paydirt. Knowing my luck it will be in front of the old members. The kids are nearly as excited as me.Comment

Do anything to avoid the Olympic stand. It was made for midgets in 1955 so if you are a 21st century average sized man you can't sit back....you have to go one forward, one back along the row. Also crap legroom, plus it's pretty grotty. The view from the top deck is nice, though...however you won't be able to get closer to the centreline than the 50 metre circle (at best and if you turn up really early).
Unfortunately at the G the entire area between the 50 metre arcs is taken up with either MCG or AFL members areas...which particularly stinks when you see all those empty seats in great positions during a Swans/Dees game. Meanwhile the truse fans are crammed in behind a fence toward the goals.
Anyway having said all that if you turn up really early (or back large for a premium seat) you can still get a pretty good view from the top deck of the southern stand and that is definitely the place to be (unless you are one of those weird footy freaks who likes to sit behind the goals or near the boundary."I'll acknowledge there are more talented teams in the competition but I won't acknowledge that there is a better team in the competition" Paul Roos March 2005Comment
