I must say he presented himself around the ground at times, but definitely stuffed uq quite a number of times. He got some tough opportunities to impress but failed to do so. Maybe give him a few more games? I definitely thing Roos will...

Maybe he'll be able to impress again eventually, but he really needs to stand up and start leading.

I'm of the 'give the guy a break' faction, and I thought he did some good things yesterday. As someone mentioned above, it's very doubtful that Roosy would have given Powell the job on Pavlich, and who knows if someone else would have done as well as I thought Saddo did. Sure, he wasn't BOG, but if there's room for the youngsters to be let into the team to improve, why is there not room for Saddo, who has proven his skill before and, IMO, is simply down on confidence.

The only bad thing that sticks out about his game yesterday to me was when he got caught holding the ball, other than that, I thought he did well.

Can anyone tell me within reason what kind of performance Saddo is going to put in from week to week on his man?

Why is it that when it comes to Leo, Tadhg, B2, Benny or even Crouchy that we know that each week they will give a very good contest and likely even come out on top?

What makes this group different to Saddo at the moment?

I don't everyone was insinuating that Powelly would have been plonked on the Pavlova, a shuffle might have been likely, but he should have been in the Top 22 IMO.

IMHO he just needs to back his judgement and learn to attack the ball like TK and our other gutsty left footer in defence. He has the skills but is just playing a conservative defensive game and is getting caught a metre or two behind trying to punch. This has led to at least 5 goals in the first two games. I say get aggressive and play in front of his man not side by side. I suspect he is down on confidence and playing not to make mistakes which of course is a recipe for disaster.

Out of interest, who else do you think would have played on Pavlich had Saddo not been in the team if it wouldn't have been his "replacement" Powell?

The thread title is the headline I would like to see.

I notice, Robbie, that you made a comment recently to the effect that "nobody is suggesting Saddo should be dropped." Wrong. I am.

Powell, Doyle, Rogers (for a start) would have been more effective yesterday (IMO). Showed glimpses, but really!

Give him a go in the twos to get used to having the ball in his hand and doing something quick and effective with it. He was a liability yesterday, I thought. Not absolutely terrible, but I reckon we have other players who can play better than that.
I totally agree with you. I said similar things in a previous thread.

Er . . . wasn't CBolton playing on Pavlich when he kicked his two goals and threatened to tear the game apart?

He has the skills but is just playing a conservative defensive game and is getting caught a metre or two behind trying to punch. This has led to at least 5 goals in the first two games.
                  5 goals? I doubt it.

Isn't it the established wisdom that Saddo's aversion to punching from behind is his primary weakness?

Do we have a schism in the Anti-Saddo camp?

Maybe we need to form a committee to come up with an agreed list of what's wrong with him?

Saddo was our top tackler for the week, beating the likes of Kirk, Crouch, Mathews, Maxfield, etc.

Now it may show that he was always 2nd to the ball, but maybe, just maybe, he was putting in some big efforts to shut down the opposition. If so, he may well be on the road to redemption. I would like to think that yesterday was a fresh start for him instead of a continuation down the spiral on which he was heading.

It's not going to always be easy playing a new position straight away, which he clearly did yesterday, so lets see what he can do on a flank/wing with a little bit of time.

imo he's better off working hard in the firsts (mistakes and all) than working hard in the seconds. And he returns more tot the team. If it's a confidence thing I think the same applies.
He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)

Yeah he plays like a person with no confidence, who's heard too much from different people, shockingly indecisive. Very much struggling looked like a bunny in the headlights with the ball in his hands.

Just has to persist at senior level until he can get some confidence back. He tried.

Put the poor bloke on a wing.

He played there a lot from 1998-2001... and funnily enough, he came out of it with a reputation as one of the better young players in the competition. He was only ever sent back as a gap filler. Now we have Mathews, C Bolton, Kennelly, Barry, Schauble, Crouch, Powell and Rogers competing for six spots down back.

So why can't we put him back on the wing? Going back to the position where he established himself as a footballer is a much more positive strategy to improve his form.

I read the Herald Sun on the way home and interestingly in the official stats record his clanger count was 1. When players being touted as having a good game had higher counts.

A clanger on paper is not always a good indication of a performace, but a lot of media people are often caught out making comments on games from these. I'm sure that the comments on board here are from actually watching the game. But it's interesting how things can be perceived.
