    Schauble & Magic

If he is fit, is he an automatic inclusion for the game against the Kangaroos?

Who do we drop if he is?

I would imagine Magic will come back in at the expense of Buchanan.

The guys who may come under consideration would be:
    Ablett
    Bevan
    Doyle
    Kennelly if not fit

But I dont think Doyle will go, and the rest are quick ballrunners (maybe with the exception of Ablett). I dont think there is an obvious direct swap for Schauble.

I don't think Tiger will play. But I'd expect either Heath James and Ablett could go to give way for Schauble. I've had the chance to watch a lot of 2003 games again recently and I think Schauble adds as much to the team as Leo Barry but he's like Ben Mathews and is largely invisible. Watch how he directs our defence (as Roos used to do) and how much we needed him doing that vs the Cats. If Schauble had played I think we would have won by the margin everyone predicted us to.

Heath James will not be dropped for schauble. IMO it will either be between Bevan or NOG depending on whether Magic takes over Monty's spot.

This will allow Craig Bolton to play in the Midfield and move Schauble back to CHB and James to FB

IMHO Schauble is not one of the guys who should be given the smooth ride back into the 1's after a month out. If it was a week, then yes, put him straight back in the 22, but he's missed a fair bit of footy and could probably benefit from a run in the 2's.

          Agree.

No way will Schauble play without a couple of weeks in the ressies.

we need Schauble in defence as much as we need Nick Davis in the forwards. If Geelong could kick straight there would be a lot more comments about how woeful our backs were on Saturday night.

I'm just not sure he would gain much in the ressies when they are winning games by around 100 points each time. At fullback he won't see the ball more than 3 or 4 times in the entire game

Agree with this, though it might be worth giving him a run up forward just to get some miles in his legs. Schaubs doesn't need to learn how to play in the backline - it's just a case of getting his fitness back.

This does highlight an issue about developing our defenders. I noticed that both Powell and LRT played forward in the reserves game on Saturday - probably for exactly the reason Sharpie suggests. Yet surely their longer term position in the senior team is likely to be in defence. How do they learn?

Surely the defence did its job. It held Geelong to only 9 goals, and arguments about them kicking straighter could equally well be applied at the other end. They did take more well-positioned marks in their forward 50 than we did, but this was largely because their midfield ball-carriers had almost no pressure applied to them.

Agree that our defence didn't work too well as an offensive weapon - largely due to Kennelly being crook and Leo being cleverly taken out of the play - but defensively I reckon it did fine. At least it didn't gift Geelong 5 or so goals, as they did to us.

Saturday wasn't great but I think we need to look to the midfield and our ordinary conversion (in the final term), not to our defence, for the answers.

Schuable and MOL to come in for Ablett and Bevan, which has the team as

                    BoltonC
                    BoltonJ
                    MOL
                    Schuable
                    ROK
                    Ball
                    Barry
                    Crouch
                    Mathews
                    Doyle
                    Fosdike
                    Goodes
                    James
                    Hall
                    Kirk
                    McVeigh
                    Saddo
                    Williams
                    Maxfield
                    Schneider
                    Kennelly - Bevan/Buchanen
                    DavisN - Ablett/Buchanen

If both Kennelly and Davis dont play Buchanen plays as does Ablett.

if the above scenario happens we would line up as -

                    BoltonC Schuable Mathews

                    Barry James Schneider

                    Crouch Willo Maxfield

                    Fosdike Hall Goodes

                    MOL Doyle ROK

                    Ball Bolton Kirk

                    Bench : Saddo,Buchanen,Ablett & McVeigh.

If Kennelly and Davis play then we would line up as -

                    BoltonC Schuable Mathews

                    Kennelly James Barry

                    Crouch Willo Maxfield

                    Davis Hall Goodes

                    MOL Doyle Schneider

                    Ball Bolton Kirk

                    Bench : Saddo, Fosdike,McVeigh & ROK.

I would like to see Rogers included at the expense of Saddo as I think Rogers would be great vs McKernan.

Fosdike relinquished his forward spot to Schneids as the pocket rocket is more valuable up forward.

Doyle stays in the team as the Roos will be very short down back with Archer and possibly Colbert set to miss.

Crouch, Kirk and Mathews will take Grant,Simpson & Stevens -

                    Crouch Vs Grant
                    Kirk Vs Simpson
                    Mathews Vs Stevens.

                    James takes Petrie
Schuable Vs Sav or however is staking out the goalsquare.

I'm really only worried about Brent Harvey, I suppose Craig Bolton can take him but I'd much rather Crouchy.

                    Thoughts?

Look it will be Bucky for Magic and for Schauble it would be either Ablett or Beven. I would take Ablett out as he isn't showing the greatest of form in the seniors and a run in the twos might be the kick up the arse he needs to get back on track. Tiger should play, but I doubt Davis will be ready to play and if he was a line ball call, I would give him another week to get over the injury and make the chance of re-injury less likely.

                      My side therefore

B: Jared Crouch Andrew Schauble Heath James
HB: Tadhg Kennelly Craig Bolton Leo Barry
C: Ben Mathews Paul Williams Stuart Maxfield
HF: Nic Fosdike Barry Hall Adam Schneider
                      F: Michael O'Loughlin Jason Ball Ryan O'Keefe
R: Adam Goodes Brett Kirk Jude Bolton
Int: Jarred McVeigh Stephen Doyle Paul Beven Jason Saddington
Emg: Lewis Roberts-Thomson Mark Powell Luke Ablett

                      In: Schauble and O'Loughlin
                      Out: Ablett and Buchanan

unfortunately i think Buchanan is destined to be one of those players who consistently shines in the 2s yet does not quite have it at senior level.

He has looked lost whenever he has been given the chance. Runs around trying to get a kick, just doesnt seem to have to abilty to find the ball. Hope im wrong but the contrast with him and Bevan are fairly dramatic ! Some kids just have it, others no matter how hard they try struggle

Anyone who saw the practice match against the Roos at Optarse Oval knows Doyle will play this week. You may even find that LRT plays as well.

The Kanga's have a very tall foward line and we will need options if plan A fails.

As noted Archer will be out (When I spoke to Colbert on Sunday he said that he will be a starter) so we may want to try and stretch their defense in the hope of Laidley having to tamper with their forward line and move someone back.
