Swan Reserves too strong for Weston Creek Lions
The Sydney Swans Reserves started their 2004 AFL Canberra season with a resounding 94 point victory over the Weston Creek Lions at the SCG on Saturday.
Lewis Roberts-Thomson was best afield kicking five goals whilst playing at centre half forward before finishing the game at centre half back where he continued to control the game. During his time at centre half back he took a number of strong marks finishing the day with fourteen.
Scott McGlone was the other stand out player for the Swans with twenty eight disposals including three goals. Dempster (wing), Davis (half forward) and Powell (full forward) were the other strong contributors whilst Woollongong youngster, Adam McConnochie was impressive with thirteen disposals and two goals.
Whilst the Swans won convincingly, they were far from impressive at times with their superior ability rather than effective team play keeping them in front of their less talented opponents.
Weston Creek started the game well and it was not until the twenty minute mark of the first quarter that the Swans finally hit the lead when Josh Willoughby goaled on the run from fifteen metres out.
The quarter finished with a classy goal from McConnochie who marked at half back, ran through the midfield and goaled from forty five metres resulting in the Swans leading by eighteen points at quarter time.
The Swans started to control the game throughout the second quarter kicking six goals to one to extend their lead to fifty four points at half time.
During the third quarter Lewis Roberts-Thomson kicked his fifth goal from smart play from young ruckman, Andrew Ericksen, who cleverly tapped the ball to Roberts-Thomson in the goal square.
The Swans continued to dominate the scoreboard in the final term kicking seven goals eight behinds to three goals before finally running out winners 22.26 (158) to 10.4 (64).
