    Goodes, Ricuitto & Buckley

    Does anyone sense that the 3 Brownlow Medalists are suffering a slight form slump at the beginning of 2004?

    Not too worried about Bucks or the Riu, but Goodesy is a problem for mine.

    I think Gerard hit it on the head for me the other night when he said that Goodesy was still showing the flashes of brilliance but less of the hard work that catipulted him to STAR status last season.

    I know he works hard at stoppages because he is working with monsters and he is a rucking midget, but his other work around the ground is less profound than 2003.

    Also, I was really hoping his goal kicking would improve this year because he claimed that skills and kicking was something he was working hard on during pre-season but there is no evidence of improvement.

    It is early days but his goal is consistency, we've heard him say it more than once. I'd like to see a big one from the champ this week.

      To me it doesn't quite add up that Goodes has dropped his work rate. Everything that has been said and written about him indicate he is a highly determined and modest guy who believes he still has a long way to go to become the AFL player he can.

      I know Healy attributed it to a fall off in work rate in the Geelong commentary but that was a strange and haphazard commentary all round - with players frequently misidentified - and I'm not convinced Gerard did get it right.

      For mine, Goodes seems to be trying to do the spectacular stuff to much and not just getting the basics right - which to be fair, Healy also commented on. That means that he's often failing to win possession or move the ball on to the advantage of the Swans even when he does get to contests.

      It would be fantastic to see him play a great game but we don't need him to. We do need him to just play the percentages. Him trying to have a "big one" could be half the problem.

          I don't really want his big one to be loaded with spekkies or goal upon goal, more along the lines of successful possessions, hitting targets, moving handballs off faster, not try and break every tackle and playing more for his team mates.

          Personally, I prefer it when Goodesy is bit angry because it means his determination levels rise and he makes more contests work his way.

          As for the commentary last Saturday night, if Matt Campbell is not sacked really soon, televisions are going to have to be switched off. I know Fox had a tonne of commitements last weekend so they were scrapping the bottom of the barrell, but his calling is the worst in the business. I'd rather hear SOS splutter around saying bugger all that we didn't already just see.

          If Campbell calls one more player a "wonderful player" or "wonderful kick" or "wonderful copenhagen" I might just go nuts.

                  The commentators said that he had his worst game for 1 and a half years last week. I dont remember that far back, but I think people are just expecting him to go out and dominate week-in, week-out - hence the criticism when he has a bad day.

                  Whilst I agree that he didnt have the best of games against Geelong, he did still show that he is a match winner for us, capable of doing the special things that can turn the tide of a game our way. Two examples: the spectacular one-handed floating mark, and the goal from the square in the last term.

                  As long as our other boys around the ground do their bit, we can afford to have Goodesy have a bad game once in a blue moon.

                      He has not played well since he went of in Bris. Rnd 1 when he twisted his ankle.

                      He was playing sensational up to that point. Yes he did kick a great goal afterwards.

                      So I wonder whether he is carrying a slight injury that is hampering is normal, sparkling football????
