    Random Thoughts

*Like that we share the goals around and have more than one or two avenues to goal but for someone who is playing really well, Barry Hall only has 12 goals which is eighth place - nine behind Frasier Gehrig.

How do we share the goals and still get Barry the Coleman??

*Amazing the difference when Mathews, Kennelly and Barry aren't closely checked. We got amazing run out of half-back.

*Apparently Michael Roberts called Roosy, Kanga - is this is nickname?? Never knew it but makes perfect sense.

*I though Bevo was unlucky no to get RS nomination in Week 2. If he doesnt get one this week, its rigged.

*Our two lowest possession winners were McVeigh and LRT with nine each!!

*What do other sides do about Kirky. He takes out their best player and becomes one of our best. 23 touches, two goals and one poster. Equal first in the tackle count with 21. Is there anything this man can't do???

*What odds on back-to-back Brownlows for Goodesy??

*Captain Maxfield - most under rated. A fantastic skipper and couldn't have hoped for a better leader post Kelly.

Barry just needs to kick straight.

The Kangas went in with a tall forward line and couldn't compete on the ground.I am sure other teams will do what Geelong did and mark Leo ,Tadgh and the others to stop the run.
I still think there is room for improvement. Our goal kicking isn't too flash this year.

He is without doubt one of our key players, and imo one of the main inputs to team morale. A genuine quiet achiever, and long may he fly under the radar!
He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)

I think 'Kanga' was Roosy's nickname at the Lions.

I have a footy card from (I think) 1996 that has 'Kanga' where players had either a) a nickname or b) 3 or 4 words that 'defined' their way of playing.

Didn't seem to survive the move to Sydney.

We had an average of 15 stats per player, so I guess with Matthews at 31being the highest, there were a few to spread around...

We do need to put some things in perspective though, despite the fact that it was a very good win.

The first 15 minutes showed what happens when our defence is put under pressure - any defence in the league would struggle with the ball coming in that quickly and regularly, but it did highlight that guys like Barry, Kennelly, James etc rely heavily on their midfielders restricting their opponents supply (or at least how quickly it comes in).

We do need Schauble and Fixter/Crouch/Bevan etc there to complement the others.

There was a fair bit of lairising as the game went on (eg. Goodes handball to Schneider in the last quarter) - I guess if there is a time to do it it's when you're 10 goals up in the last qtr though.

In any game there will be big mistakes that seem like the end of the world at the time.

For example when Leo was caught with the ball.
And we had many many handballs where the recieving player had an opponent standing beside him.

But there are 2 teams on the field, and the opposition will each have different skill areas which we will be able to exploit and areas where they beat us.

But in the end, we need to look at the big picture, and that is that they kicked 6 goals in 15 or so minutes and then only 4 in the remaining playing time.

That is great stuff, and may even rate a mention on Talking Footy if we are lucky.

Actually, I'm thinking that we need a few more wins before they bring us up lol

A great team effort, we were jumped, adjusted, and took apart a team that has been in good form (NB Sainters)

Everyone played a part, but avoiding stating the more obvious, Bazza's support play and Doyle and Ball's combined efforts rate for mine.

And let's face it Sadds has really copped it on here and he had a confidence boosting game today. If we can only develop Powell and LRT asCentre Half forward / backs we are well set.

This was heartening and as Melbne have won three perhaps our boys won't underestimate them next week!!!

                      A couple of other things.

Thought amongst others Doyle's ruckwork when he came on in the first q were a huge influence in getting us back in the game and yet he still wasn't used hugely for the rest of the match.

Goodesy is still lacking a lot of confidence in his goal kicking, twice he gave the ball away, to often worse positions, when he had very very gettable set shots. In part it is effecting his overall confidence, he's got to get it sorted out quickly.

There was a bit of shutdown mentality in play in the last q, I really would've liked us to nail a 10 goal win (hard taskmaster eh!!!)

Laidley clearly backed his forwards to outscore us and for the first 10 mins. he looked like he was on a winner, all it took for us was to clean up our clearance work (I thought we were getting enough close ball but wasn't clean enough in getting it out, leading them to swoop and put the ball in to their forward line quickly) and then kick it to Hall. In that sense good to see a strong attacking game by both sides (Given the success of Lions and Cats tactics I don't think we'll see too many more). I reckon every first half goal went through Hall in some way, he was given a lot of room to move and ate it up.

Was bringing on Dyle at the 12 minutes mark the turning point? I heard the commentators mention that he was coming on and INSTANTLY the pattern of play reversed itself. If it's that easy let's save him as our secret weapon!

That's exactly what it looked like to me too, but I think some other changes may have been made. I like the move Roos has used in the last two games, where Kirky starts off with a tagging role, but is later allowed a bit more freedom, at which point he nicks off and racks up a goal or two and a bucket-load of quality posession.
