When you think about it, one kick...

...is the difference between the media not rating us at all, and us being an overrated powerhouse.

If Ball had kicked that goal against Brisbane, we not only would be 4 - 0, but we would have beaten the reigning premiers at their home ground.

Funny how things coul dbe so different right now.

But after a few more wins, we will start to earn some coverage.

I don't want the coverage. All we need is the Sydney media reporting on us in a positive light to help our crowd figures and that is it.

I want the rest of the non-swans fans and media around the nation to remain totally oblivious to us. Works to our advantage IMO.

You'd better get a gag for Plough, Healy and Walls.

I wonder if Jason's thoughts were "no, no... we deserved to win!" or "*#&#@, *#*@(.... I will never hear the #*@(ing end of this!"

No matter how heart breaking, the team that wins, deserves to win.

The other stuff is biased perception.

If we had won, it would be unfair of Lions supporters to be moaning about how they deserved to win.

I dont begrudge the Lions, I rue our performance and I quietly rue Nick's injury.

I don't begrudge the loss and I don't think anyone else here does either - though the ongoing Jason B yips are a pain. But Melbourne commentators have taken to ignoring how close that loss was. So the Hun today talks about how our surprise win last weekend went against the respective form of the two teams!

I find it teeth-grindingly irritating that we continue to be dismissed by the AFL commentators but I rationalise that if it gets us one step closer to a flag I can live with it.

Yeah, I hope people don't think I was taking a shot at Ball.

For me, that's footy, I moved on 5 minutes after it happened.

But I just though it was interesting how different we would be regarded by the media, had he kicked that one goal.

No, the Melbourne media would still be waiting for us to fall over.

The only place we are rated is on that blue couch.

Let them ignore us - they are too caught up in the woeful Tigers and Hawks to even consider giving us column space which suits me fine.

I wonder, though, whether that close loss to Brisbane could have been a blessing in disguise by bringing the team to the ground with a thump. Last year we started with a huge win, albeit over one of the worst teams in the comp and it then took 3 and a half games before the team remembered that it needs to work hard to win.

A victory against the Lions first up might have lulled the team into the view that they were better than they are and caused us to drop one of the subsequent games.

Of course this is all pyschological speculation but I like to believe that things happen for a reason. And I'd argue that the team possibly learned more by losing that game than they might had they won it. Winning at the end of the season is what counts and a few hard-earned lessons along the way should be a good thing.

I agree with Liz's point. Having watched the Swans get beyond themselves so many times before, I think this may have been a useful learning experience for them. To my mind, the most important thing for our success this year, that is within our control, is to remember that if we want to win we have to play hard, consistent team football. If we do that, then we have a very good chance of finishing in the top couple, cet par.

It is impossible to imagine what the Melbourne media would be like now if the Swans were 4-0, but I wouldn't expect that it would be a lot more than the current situation. If you think about it, most of the news reports in the paper and on the TV are about the bottom four sides. Even St.Kilda, the only 4-0 team aren't getting as much media attention as 'the poor performers', even though they are a Victorian team. The Melbourne media are acting as if they're only caring about attacking the Richmonds and the Hawthorns.

i don't think its a surprise how little coverage we get in melbourne (let alone adelaide and the rest). in papers in every city, for every article of careful analysis there are a dozen put in just to sell papers. in melbourne they don't have as much access to players, coaches and officials and although the swans have a loyal and strong supporter base in victoria, we're not going to sell as many papers as ridiculous speculation on the futures of three or four worn-out mexican coaches.

the saints ARE 4-0 and how many times do you hear about them on our airways or see them in the Herald?

Ever read the courier mail? the reason there's no issue about salary caps in brisbane is that there seems to be only one team in the comp (and good luck to them too).

                          tim

please don't think i've got a problem with salary cap adjustments. i don't.
then again, i think it would be worth trying 15-16 players on field so what would i know
