    Roos gives rivals hope

    Roos gives rivals hope
    Sydney
    April 23, 2004

Twelve months after Sydney turned its AFL season around, Swans coach Paul Roos has a message for the current stragglers in the competition - hang in there, there's a long way to go.

While Sydney is comfortably in third spot, he can relate better than most to the early season woes of some of the competition's glamour clubs.

Struggling at 1-3 after four rounds last year, the Swans triggered a run of four successive victories and 14 wins from its next 19 games. Roos, who was in his first full season, took the Swans to within a game of the grand final.

"Everyone is talking gloom and doom about Hawthorn and some of the teams, Geelong and Adelaide, but there's still 18 rounds to go," Roos said.

"Probably the biggest reason for us to come out of last year is that it was a long year and, even though we are 3-1 (this year), three wins are not going to get you in the eight.

"So I don't think you can get too carried away either way.

"If you are a bit down, as some of the teams are, they've still got a lot of incentive and a lot of games left to get up."

Does anyone seriously believe Richmond are about to go on a run like the 2003 Swans???

    Nice try Roosey!!

Richmond, no, but a team like the Hawks conceivably could.

One thing that pundits ignored about the Swans at the start of last year was that they had come home in 2002 like a wet sail. Obviously our resurgance was easily linked to the change of coach but it demonstrated that we did have a talented team. The Hawks had a really strong run at the end of 2003 and they are a team that, when it gets its confidence up, is certainly capable of stringing a few wins together.

It also demonstrates it is too early to write the Pies off as a contender, although the way they are struggling to find players worthy of filling spots 16-22 in their team at the moment must raise questions. And it is not as if their depth is decimated by injury at the moment, although the top line of their team is badly affected by the injuries to Tarrant and Buckley.

I really think it would be am herculean effort for the Pies to make another grand final this year.

I just cant see it happening.
