Totally agree Stellation. Goodesey NEEDS to be where the ball is, chasing it all the time. In the forward line he tends to go to sleep a bit, with childline errors of the ilk we saw on Saturday night the result.

I recall watching a match in 2002 in Brisbane where it was quite obvious that at FF Goodesy was simply going through the motions. He has only become the player he is capable of being since Roosey put him in the middle of the park.

I still like him in the ruck, as he has to handle the responsibility of the bounces and HAS to be part of the play. But if you want Ball or Dyle there, put him at ruck rover at least.

But my attitude is, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Goodesy won the Brownlow as a follower, not in the forward line. With Maxfield off in the 2nd quarter or midfield and onballers fell apart. We need Goodesy there as much as we humanly can, despite the new tall timber available to us.

Try to think a little laterally here.

It doesn't matter if Goodes won the Brownlowe for playing in ruck or for peeling potatoes. The fact is the team could really use a decent CHB right now.

With Magic returning next week, our forward structure is pretty much in place. With Ball & Doyle holding down ruck, the old chestnut of 'where to play Goodes' is bound to raise it's head again.

As great as it is to see him running around everywhere, that may not be the best thing for the team (or for him, long-term).

He could turn CHB into an attacking position in the same way Tige & Leo have. Then he'd still be a match-up nightmare.

Can you at least see what I'm trying to get at?
To all those people who waited 72 years to see a South Melbourne/Sydney Swans premiership HERE IT IS!!

I think I understand - true, Goodes could turn CHB into an attacking position like Tadhg and Leo have with their run from HB.

It could even be a weapon when teams try to shut down the Swan's running game - having 3, all mobile, defenders on the HB line, would make it easier to generate the running game from defence when it stalls.

I wouldn't be in favour of him playing on the big forwards on a permanent basis though as this would inevitably mean him playing a more negating role which is what we don't want as it's more likely to take him out of the play.

I could see him playing across half back, in a Paul Roos sort of role, but as a loose man so he can wander forward as well.

I'd prefer not to have him specifically match up on someone in defence.
Captain Logic is not steering this tugboat.

No I can't.The hardest match up in the comp turned into a backman. As for running the ball out of defence surely the team is much better served with Goodes as a marking option up the field when Leo and Tadhg are pressured.
How matching up against Brown,Tredrea etc is better for his career long term than running around taking uncontested marks(since oppostion players can't keep up with him) I really don't understand.
The backline would only be an option when he is in the twilight of his career.Roos showed you can lose your speed and athleticism but still be important if you have "smarts".We need ballgetters in the midfield as our forward line is strong and our backs struggle when the ball comes in fast.
Anyway thats my uneducated opinion.

The team could also use a game winning ruck rover right now.

I think Schauble is one of the best defenders in the league when it comes to knowing when to run off your key position forward to offer a link up field, and if you watch him he would rarely do it more than twice a quarter. I don't think that you could play CHB on the likes of Brown or Tredrea and afford to run off them as much as using Goodes there would require. He could certainly run off them a couple of times or more a quarter, but he still needs to be accountable for that CHF and we need Goodes in the play more than that. The second the ball is held up Goodes would have to drop back to his man.
I knew him as a gentle young man, I cannot say for sure the reasons for his decline
We watched him fade before our very eyes, and years before his time
