    Bombers match

This is a game I'm expecting us to lose and frankly I prefer that situation because we seem to play far better in games where we go in as underdogs.

Just this year there was the North Melbourne match but last year - obviously there was the final against Port but apart from that there were both home and away games against the Lions and also the away matches against the Crows, Pies and Tigers in which we played way over and above expectations.

Even if we get smashed, beginning the year 3-3 is no disgrace and with some of our injured guys hopefully to return, we can look forward to attacking the middle part of the year with gusto.

The media have gone on so much about 1923 - last win v Bombers at MCG - that it can mean only one thing - we'll win.

Jude Bolton sounded a bit careless on WLF tonight : some comment about stop Hird , win the game.I'm sure he didn't mean it like it sounds, but he's given Sheedy a motivational card to play.

Aah , who cares - Swans to win by six goals.

It wasn't that long ago (1998) that we played Collingwood at the MCG with a similar statistic being bandied about. We won, of course. (That match against Collingwood at the MCG was the first between the two clubs at that venue since the 1936 Grand Final.)

Of course, let me ask you this - how many times since 1923 have the Swans played the Bombers at the 'G?

      Only eight:
      1924 SF Essendon 10.12 (72) d. South Melb 4.15 (39)
      1992 R11 Essendon 16.20 (116) d. Sydney 10.13 (73)
      1993 R19 Essendon 18.9 (117) d. Sydney 13.18 (96)
      1994 R14 Essendon 19.15 (129) d. Sydney 14.11 (95)
      1996 R21 Essendon 14.16 (100) d. Sydney 12.10 (82)
      1998 R11 Essendon 24.16 (160) d. Sydney 15.10 (100)
      1999 R3 Essendon 22.17 (149) d. Sydney 9.14 (68)
      1999 QF Essendon 18.15 (123) d. Sydney 7.12 (54)

It's also worth pointing out that since Kevin Sheedy took over as the coach of the Bombers in 1981, the Saints had only beaten the Bombers five times but the Saints did it this year. I think we will also beat the Bombers. The best team they have defeated so far this year is Carlton, and the Blues are not likely top-8 material this year.

I really have a problem with this way of thinking. How do we ever expect to win a flag if we want to be the underdogs every weeks? You cant go and be happy about losing games because it takes the pressure off. Instead it does the opposite. We will have lost 2 in a row, and suddenly a game against Richmond is looking like a make or break must-win game or else we are really stuffed.
