Popped in on the team's training session this afternoon.
I'm not going to write a full report because there wasn't a huge amount of difference to a couple of weeks ago. But here are some observations:
- A bit more focus on long kicking drills than a fortnight ago, especially kicking to leads from the forwards
- Also a couple of drills specifically working on clearances, with Doyle and Ball providing the ruck contest
- Heath spent a fair bit of time working on his spoiling
- They did do a short competitive session towards the end but it was essentially the senior team against the rest (with some of the coaches making up the numbers) so 'competitive' might be stretching it a bit
- Based on who was wearing the red jumpers (ie the seniors) I'm predicting a recall for Ablett this week, though I guess this will depend on whether Maxfield comes up. (He was there but didn't train.)
- Rogers was also assigned a red jumper. LRT and Powell were both in white. Read into that what you will.
- McVeigh was a stand-out during this 'competitive' drill and was getting vocal acknowledgement from the coaches. Whoever labelled him as athlete first, footballer second was way way off the mark.
- At the very end Bazza conducted a 'trick kicking at goal' clinic with a handful of players - Saddo, Thewlis, Hunt, Leo. I think this was mostly to kill time while others were working on clearance drills and I think he'll need a few more of these sessions before any of these players scores goal of the year. Leo did get a couple of trick shots through though - he obviously hasn't completely forgotten how to kick the goals.
On the more trivial side:
- the hair dye has been out in force, with Dempster now sporting a head of jet black hair. And Monty seems to have decided he was too hard to tell apart from Schneider when they played together two weeks ago and he too has now got the blonde streaks going.
- and on the subject of twins, we have another pair in the offing to give Fozzie/McVeigh, Schneider/ Buchanan, B2/ Bevan a run for their money. It occured to me watching the reserves play down in Canberra, but seeing the two of them running together this afternoon, Potter and B1 could cause us some problems if they ever get to play together. Same height, same hair, same build, they even move in a very similar way. Close up you wouldn't mix them up but in the heat of a game certainly could cause some confusion.
