Swans no longer history down south

Swans no longer history down south
    By Richard Hinds
    April 30, 2004

When the Swans run onto the MCG for tomorrow's important match against Essendon, they will enjoy, as usual, the vocal support of their strong group of Melbourne fans.

In a crowd expected to be in excess of 50,000, about one-third will be barracking for the Swans. Last year, at matches against Carlton and Melbourne, it seemed there were more fans backing Sydney than the home teams.

Such a strong show of support is not new. Since they reached the 1996 grand final, many of the disenfranchised South Melbourne supporters still angry about the club's relocation returned to the fold. The Swans have worked hard to welcome them back.

However, this year the club has taken its efforts to retain and recruit Melbourne supporters to a new, more professional, level. "It's something that is obviously an asset to us," Swans chairman Richard Colless says. "And rather than run it at a cost as it has been in the past, we're looking at it as a source of profit."

To that end, the Swans hired former star half-forward Tony Morwood as their Melbourne manager. After completing his outstanding playing career, Morwood returned to live in Melbourne in 1991 but continued his involvement with the club, acting in recent times as master of ceremonies at club functions.

While Morwood says the Swans' efforts to cater for the old South Melbourne fans - and any other Melbourne-based supporters - have been appreciated, one of his goals is to make them feel as valuable as the Sydney-based members.

"We had a family day and the coach and the top 10 players came down," he says. "It was really a step up on what we'd done for people here before.

"I think in the past there was a feeling that what was done for the fans in Sydney was always pretty spiffo, but in Melbourne they had to watch the dollars."

That was largely because it was costing the club money to service its Melbourne membership.

Morwood has set about correcting that. At the family day, $11,000 worth of merchandise was sold. Only $4000 worth had been sold through the club in the whole of last year.

Morwood has set the target of signing 10,000 Melbourne members in the next few years, an ambitious goal given there were just 4400 last season. He expects the figure to reach 6000 after the club's first match in Melbourne on Saturday and, given good on-field performances, to get to 10,000 within the next three years.

But given it is 23 years since the Swans migrated to Sydney, the core of former South Melbourne supporters is ageing. Where does the next generation of Melbourne-based Swans fans come from?

Morwood says people who have moved from Sydney to Melbourne, kids who like watching the Swans on television and, most significantly, the children and grandchildren of South Melbourne supporters will keep the link alive. He cites the case of one of the mascots for tomorrow's game. The young boy wrote to the club telling how his recently deceased grandfather had given him his first Swans jumper when he was two years old.

"We've got even more support down here than Brisbane [who merged with Fitzroy], but they've done a terrific job harnessing that," says Morwood. "It was costing them somewhere between $100,000 and $200,000 to run their Melbourne operation and now they are doing well out of it."

Besides the potential financial benefits, the Swans' Melbourne fans provide a competitive advantage on match days. The great frustration for those fans is that the Swans do not play in Melbourne more often. Sydney will play just five times in Melbourne this year, plus a game against Geelong at Skilled Stadium.

Morwood says: "It's another eight weeks before our next game here. I think it's important for the team to be playing here, too, because, in the end, this is where you've got to win finals. This is where you win it."

That's me! Three of my cousins are also passionate Swans fans and that's because of our family being Old South Melbourne fans.

It just goes to show how many Swans fans in Melbourne there are and how most people don't recognise it until they go to a game. A couple of years ago. I took my friend to a game and she was shocked at the amount of red and white present. Finally the Swans are taking notice of the Melbourne members and hopefully the media will recognise that we're here as well (what's the chance of that?)

I hope this article puts to rest the notion that the club doesn't give a damn about its Melbourne members. Its clear that the club has never made a cent in Melbourne, but regardless is still committed.

Here's hoping for 6-7 games next year

            They're positive words.

But we had them last year, too, and we've still only got five games here.

I'll give Morwood all the credit he deserves, once he deserves it.

Why do even "proper" reporters keep saying there are 6 Victorian games??? can't they count? There are FOUR Melbourne games - 2 at the G, one at the Dome and one at Carlton

Unfortunately, there isn't much the club can do after they put in their requests - it comes down to the AFL scheduling - bar tell the Bulldogs that they no longer want to host the Doggies home game for them at the SCG, meaning it either becomes a Sydney home game creating another away game, or the game ends up in Melbourne again as a Dogs home game.

                  I'm on the Chandwagon!!!

If you cannot compete for the premiership, it's better to be young and exciting than middle-aged and dowdy.

Mike_B, I suggest that we all leave this particular gem alone. You may not be aware mate, but this issue has been hung drawn and quartered in this thread

Yeah same here. Oh and btw mr article writer, it's only 4 games in melbourne and one in geelong. To me that adds up to only 5?

I'd like to know a bit more how having 5000 odd Melbourne members costs the Swans money????
I guess there is the office and I spose it depends on what sort of deal we get with the home team for the games Melb. membership allows entry.
I find it a bit hard to believe that the whole thing runs at a loss.

As for Sydney fans getting all the "spiffo" things I don't remember us getting a family day for the last few years!!!!

More family days by themselves will not get the club 10,000 Melbourne members. Appointing Tony Morwood at a salary of what $75-$90k p.a. just adds to the costs or and will add nothing to the membership numbers. The only way membership numbers will go up is to create a situation where going to the footy on a regular basis becomes a habit and membership is rewarding,

From my earliest years I attended every Sth Melbourne game (barring occasional illness)with my family for 30 years. We saw 22 games a year and saw the same faces at the games each week. When Sth went to Sydney it dropped to half that but we saw all the away games on TV. When the AFL was formed and as interstate teams joined the competition the numbers gradually dropped and we saw less games direct on TV. We now get 4 games in Melbourne, one at Carlton and one at Geelong. Not much is on TV unless it you get Foxtel/Optus. We have to pay for a seat at Geelong and unless you get to Carlton very early you get to pay for a seat in the Legends Stand or don't get entry.

It is very difficult to justify buying a membership in Melbourne unless you want to think of it as a donation. I was always a member before the club moved to Sydney and I have always bought a membership since the move and thought of it as a donation because of the clubs perilous financial position. Financially it is not justifiable.

As a kid I always knew what I was doing Saturday afternoon. It was footy time. These days if you buy a membership you have to diarise when the footy is on. It is easy to make other plans for the day when we have the Swans playing in Melbourne and not be able to attend. For instance we play Essendon this Saturday and the next Melbourne game is against Carlton at Optus Oval in eight weeks time on a Saturday and then Geelong a few weeks later on a Sunday.

Without more games in Melbourne and having those games played on a more regular basis the hopes of 10,000 Melbourne members is a pipe dream. Save Tony Morwoods salary and get rid of him. He is a waste of money.

Ps IMO we don't need Melbourne office. A free phone number to Sydney is good enough. I am sure the club could organise small groups of supporters to man stalls outside the grounds we play on to sell memberships, clothing badges etc like other clubs do. You have to be keen to travel into the StKilda Rd office to buy a beanie etc when you can do it by mail if you are really deperate or buy it outside the ground. See, I have just saved the club the cost of rented premises and ane the cost of staff.

I got a response from the club to an email I sent asking whether the Melbourne home team charges for the entry of a Swans Melbourne member and they said that, yes, the club pays a gate entry fee for each member who attends a match, but they would not reveal how much. Is this the GA fee ? I don't know. If it is, then the margin to the club on this membership would be pretty tight. This is I assume the reason to drive memberships to 10,000, to get the associated economies of scale.

Certainly agree with the point about a physical office. I mean many call centres are based in India these days and you don't notice the difference. there is no reason why the Sydney office could not manage day-to-day membership enquiries by phone or email.
