    Goodes in the ruck....finally

Reported on Ch 10, and yet to see it here, that Goodes will be rucking this week and his failed attempt as a forward wont go ahead. Awesome news, I know some here will be stoked to hear it. About time i guess, no real shock either, it just wasnt working and we are a better team with him there.

Excellent. I think we have to accept that as good as Goodes is, the only position he is really confident in playing, is ruck.

Okay so Goodes in the ruck.

      Rucking or roving?

If Goodes is rucking not roving will both Ball and Doyle be in the team.

Can Doyle and Ball play in the same team if Goodes is rucking?

Where will Doyle/Ball play while Goodes is rucking?

Guess Doyle will have to have some serious reserve time to get confidence up.

Ball is a better ruckman than Doyle, though Doyle is far better at FF than Ball. Doyle is a better kick also. So if only one was in the team it would be hard to choose. I guess for me i would choose Ball if Magic was playing and if magic wasn';t playing id choosew doyle
Adam Goodes - The great red and white hope.

When Doyle kicks 75 goals in a season he will be a better forward than Ball, Ball has one thing over Doyle experince he has played years as a key forward with the Eagles

Goodes back in the middle of things
            By Jessica Halloran
            May 13, 2004

After spending the past three weeks on the forward line - and having only one goal to show for it - Sydney's Adam Goodes will return to the ruck for Saturday's match against West Coast in Perth.

As part of expanding his role at the Swans, the Brownlow medallist has spent more time up forward this year. But on the spacious Subiaco Oval, the athletic player will be used more heavily as a ruckman.

"I'd say we would be looking to get him back in the ruck a bit this week, because certainly on a bigger ground he is going to help us in that area," Swans coach Paul Roos said.

Subiaco is the longest ground the Swans will play on this year at 175.6 metres, and is 122.4m wide.

Goodes said he was hoping to develop into a more damaging and accurate forward and was looking to lift his form, which has been patchy.

"They are going to just start me off in the ruck [on Saturday] and see how we go," Goodes said. "Obviously I have started games in the ruck this year, and that's where I get my confidence with early touches, so that will be good this weekend."

Last year Goodes had his career-best season and was named in the All-Australian side as the ruckman. But with Swans ruckmen Jason Ball and Stephen Doyle both back from injury, Goodes had been used up forward to develop his game.

Meanwhile, forward Michael O'Loughlin completed yesterday afternoon's training session at the SCG and will return after a five-week absence caused by a hamstring injury.

Along with a group of players, including Barry Hall and Paul Williams, O'Loughlin will fly to Perth today for the match, while the rest of the team will travel tomorrow.

Roos said O'Loughlin was eager to get back on the field.

"He was in my office yesterday morning jumping up and down and ready to play," Roos said. "That's probably good enough to pick him.

"He'll go on the Thursday, which will give him a full day on the Friday, then another day when we play on the Saturday. We do that with a lot of our guys that maybe have bad backs or injury problems, so he'll go earlier."

Roos said there would be two or three changes to the line-up beaten by 13 points by Richmond last weekend.

"It's probably not a reflection, necessarily, of the guys' form," Roos said. "Different opposition, different size of the ground becomes a factor as well.

"When you play on a small ground you can probably get away with bigger-type players. Over there, it's a massive ground, so you need a fair bit of run."

This will also allow him to roam the ground, like he used to, picking up damaging possessions. The sort of possessions the made him a Bronlow Medallist.

It is also a forced move, given that MOL is back. They now have the forward structure that has been missing for 5 weeks, thus allowing them to release Goodes back into the centre of the ground.

Theory: This could also mean that, he is no longer "injured" !?!?!?

I hope they give Buchanan another go. Can't see a spot for one of Doyle/Ball this week.

                  For me:

                  In: O'Loughlin, Nicks, McVeigh
                  Out: Ablett, Powell, Doyle.

Regarding Goodes, ND was interviewed on SEN last night and intimated that he was being played out of position. He said he felt that he should be developed along the lines of a Kouta type where he can run free and is a difficult match-up. Also said the coaches felt the players were not adhering to the game-plan and that MOL returning will take pressure off all the other forwards. He would prefer to play half forward than out of the square.

Agreed. However, we will see if saddo and magic can play in the same forward line... personally, i hope so, and i dont see why it wouldnt as both are not inclined to go to the goal square looking to wrestle for a mark, they just have to make sure that they lead to different parts of the 50, OR they go quarter about where one goes up and one stays down as the rover!

the team then should look like this

                      crouch james mathews
                      barry bolton kennelly
                      maxfield kirk fosdike

Buchanan surely did enough last week to ensure his selection this week. If he is dropped, there are severe problems developing in the coaches box.

Generally in agreement. Ablett will be dropped. Powell will be dropped. Let's hope they get a real stint at SOME point.

In one breath people have been complaining that it looks like Roos is just trying to get his top 22 out on the park at the cost of developing players, and in another breath people are then saying that the likes of Doyle should be dropped.

My point is, the only thing Doyle is lacking at the moment is experience. Roos has said time and time again that he has a 4 year plan. It is year 2 in that plan. At the moment, while still trying to be competitive because of the enormous expectations from last year, he has to continue that development.

Doyle's tap work at the moment is the best in the team. He gets his hand to the ball far more than Ball does, and we havent seen Goodes in the ruck recently to make a comparison, but either way he is a completely different ruckman to Doyle. The problem with Doyle in the ruck is that the midfielders still arent reading his tap well enough. This is probably due to the lack of experience training and playing with the big man. Therefore, it is advantageous for everyone in the team that Doyle continues to get game time.

As for Ablett, that is a different story I believe. When has he actually played well in a game? I mean properly well, not just one crawl to the boundary and one goal in the prelim. Sure he has never really been given an extended run to solidify a position, but one day he has to take his chances, otherwise it may never happen. Anyway, someone like Doyle is far more improtant to the make-up of our team in future years.
