Match-Ups

Mmmmm this week seems a little tricky. Not just because they have (potentially) 4 tall forwards. Their #1 small forward is a leaper as well.

So, here goes

Mark Williams - Leo Barry
Angelo Lekkas - Tadgh Kennelly
Rick Ladson - Paul Bevan
John Barker - Craig Bolton
Nick Holland - Aaron Rogers
Nathan Thompson - Heath James
Peter Everitt - Stephen Doyle

If Everitt goes forward then he needs a genuine tall. Ball seems to lack the accountability down back (as well as the speed of the mark to get near an Everitt lead). Meiklejohn is too inexperienced. Get Doyle to play in front and leave the rucking to Ball/Meiklejohn/Saddington/Hall when Everitt goes forward.

At the other end they have worries too....

Barry Hall - Trent Croad
Michael O'Loughlin - Danny Jacobs
Ryan O'Keefe - Joel Smith
Jason Saddington - Mark Graham
Nick Davis - Michael Osborne
Paul Williams - Chance Bateman

They might elect to put a more experienced player on Willo (if he is in the forward line)....but if I were Hawthorn I would be wanting to see if I could exploit Bateman's fantastic rebound against Williams naturally attacking instinct. (That's very polite of me, isn't it?).

They might put Crawford at HBF again in which case he would have an ideal opponent in Williams.

In the midfield I see Kirk going with Crawford only in the middle...put Bevan on him if he goes forward. Crouch on Mitchell I would like to see too.

Then we've got Vandenburg and Fosdike, Bolton and Ries and that about does it for the match-ups.....Maxfield on a wing would probably be up against Beaumont.

I believe they are still without Dixon and Hay.

Why wouldn't you push Doyle forward when Everitt goes forward?

Make the other team react to our changes for once.

Because Everitt is a much better FF than Doyle currently is.

Granted, but is Doyle a better FB than FF? Sure he would probably slow down Everitt, but stop him? no. I believe he would have greater impact up forward.

He hasn't had any impact up forward at all this year so I don't see why this week would be any different.

If the midfield is even but Everitt goes forward without a decent opponent the game is as good as over.

I would gamble mismatching Everitt against mis-matching Doyle any day.

Trent Croad, I love it, the only person he has wrestled with lately is Jo Beth Taylor, BBBBH should be a fairly new experience for him!

I think I would give Saddo first shot at Spider in the goalsquare so long as he was instructed to punch and spoil and not attempt to mark againast the big fella.

Other possibility is LRT at 196c v Spider's 203c.

Doyle is also a consideration. He's got a good grab, and it would sure be fun watching him one-on-one against Everitt

good call on the saddo everitt matchup.

i think the fun of watching doyle and everitt go one on one in marking contests would fade pretty sharpish....

I thought Doyle did OK at FF last year in the few opportunities he had. A good strong mark and reasonable kick!

Possibly he did oK...but there are two things to consider, 1) that was last year and 2) he may have done well, but nowhere near as well as Everitt has done...which is my point.

Saddington on Everitt is a loser, I believe.

I also concur about Saddo v Spider, not a very good match up.

Maybe Leapin' Leo could out jump his long arms.

We have not had anyone to match up on the talls for the last month so, a new strategy will have to be devised to stop them. Maybe they could win the ball out of the centre more!!!

It's all good discussing who we are going to match up against their forwards... but surely they must be worried about ours?! Barry IMO is having his best season (so far) he must be one of the toughest guys to match up. Magic, Davis and Pebbles our forwards sound more impressive then theirs...

Lets hope our midfield give them what for!

Our forwards may be more impressive than theirs but our forwards don't win 50/50 contested balls...in other words they rely on good delivery.

On the other hand other teams tall forwards generally win the 50/50 type kick and hope balls sent into their forward 50.

Hence we are going to lose UNLESS our delivery is much better than it has been (you'd have to be hopeful of this) or Their delivery is slow/terrible...this is possible but unlikely. You never know we might get on top in the midfield.

Or we unearth a large defender who beats his man....very unlikely (by this weekend anyway)

Don't forget this is the Hawks we're talking about. They have been woeful so far this year. There's a good chance that if we keep midfield pressure on they'll fold, as the Roos did. Their win last week made our win against the Cats look like sublime elegance.

They'll want another slogfest. We need to rise above it.

Or we'll spur yet another team into overachieving.
