That was my point (maybe a little unclear though - apologies) - we don't have any umps that we can count on for a free ride, but the three we have this weekend aren't in the Goldspink/Schmitt/Meredith class of crucifying us either.

If you cannot compete for the premiership, it's better to be young and exciting than middle-aged and dowdy.

I don't think you have a clue what you are talking about and If you think umpires work like that you are a peanut.
I know alot of umpires and people like you often don't know the rules and blame umpires for making mistakes which are only mistakes in your eyes. I read these stupid threads every week and this is the first time I have let it get to me, You look for every excuse why your team dose'n't win, even to the point of blaming the umpiers before the game starts so you have a ready made excuse.
Dpw, it's often a perception thing after all. Even-handed umpires tend not to stand out from the crowd, and those that one "perceives" as being not so fair .. get a teeth-clenching reception.
Goldspink, like it or lump it, has drawn the ire of many on this site (self included) for the perception that we have had plenty of frees awarded against us by him. Often decisions that may have influenced the final result. Simple as that.
OK, I know it smacks of the conspiracy theory. But, if we can have a dislike for this team or that (due to a perception/belief) its logical that the other factor in the equation (umpires) can be a focus too.
Maybe there is a PhD in here for somebody (Charlie, you finished that undergrad yet??). Do we sometimes see a decision at the ground in a different light on watching the replay and vice versa?
The fans are much like a jury of your peers. Reasonable doubt and all that. Luckily the only sentence we are able to pass is often "expletive deleted"!
Good men do good deeds. Evil men do evil deeds. But it takes religion for a good man to do evil deeds.
Do we sometimes see a decision at the ground in a different light on watching the replay and vice versa?
I reckon that, watching a game live, around 75% of the frees paid against the Swans are completely and utterly bogus. On watching a tape of the game that number probably comes down to one or two per game and, of course, you start to notice the soft ones that they got as well.
Maybe not 75%....but I agree that some of them that you thought were harsh were actually the right call.
Having said that, we have the benefit of a replay - the umps call it as they see it at that point in time and as has been mentioned so many times before, its the way it goes that the good decisions go unnoticed and the bad ones get harped upon for who knows how long.
