    Goodes named, Kouta out

    Goodes named, Kouta out

Sydney ruckman Adam Goodes has made a miracle recovery from a knee injury and has been named in the Swans? final team to play Hawthorn at the SCG on Sunday.

And the Hawks resisted the temptation to bring back out-of-form spearhead Nathan Thompson, who instead will play for Box Hill in the VFL.

Goodes looked set to miss up to two months when he became the latest ruckman to injure his posterior cruciate ligament by clashing knees with an opposing ruckman at a bounce-down last week.

But he has made a fantastic recovery with Sydney coach Paul Roos declaring the reigning Brownlow Medalist a certain starter on Friday.

The availability of Goodes is a huge boost for a struggling Sydney, which has lost its past four matches.

The Swans made three changes with Luke Ablett, Jarrad McVeigh and Rowan Warfe coming in for Nick Davis (thigh) and omitted pair Aaron Rogers and Heath James.

The Hawks named an unchanged side, following their first win since round one last week, meaning there was no place for Thompson.

He was only named as an emergency, with the Hawks instead naming Rayden Tallis, John Barker, Nick Ries and Matthew Ball on their finalised interchange bench.

Anthony Koutoufides will miss again for Carlton after being left out of the Blues' line-up for Sunday's game against the Western Bulldogs.

When Thursday's extended squad was trimmed to 22 on Friday, Koutoufides' name was missing, though there were two changes from last week with David Clarke and Barnaby French coming in for Stephen Kenna and Digby Morrell, both of whom were dropped.

Morrell has been named as an emergency along with Daniel Harford with one place to be filled.

Koutoufides, still troubled by hamstring soreness, didn't sound hopeful about his selection prospects after giving the harder, more physical contesting work a miss a training on Friday.

?I?m not too bad. I?m going to speak to the medical staff now and see what they say,? Koutoufides said after the session.

Coach Denis Pagan said: ?If you were a punter I?d say he wouldn?t play but I can?t guarantee it. He thinks he?s over the worst of it, let?s just keep our fingers crossed. He?s terribly frustrated with it.

?You?ve just got to be very careful and that?s what we?re doing. We?re not playing games by naming him and not picking him.?

The Bulldogs have made six changes with Simon Garlick, Steven Koops, Jordan McMahon, Will Minson, Adam Morgan and Wayde Skipper coming in for Matthew Croft, Kieran McGuinness, Peter Street, Scott Bassett, Adam Cooney and Lindsay Gilbee, all of whom were omitted.

Minson, picked up by the Dogs from Norwood at No 20 at the 2002 National AFL Draft, will be making his AFL debut.

West Coast Eagle Daniel Chick will play his first senior game in five weeks when his club meets St Kilda at Telstra Dome on Sunday after being included in the final 22.

Chick has recovered from a complicated thigh complaint and was been named on the interchange bench in one of two changes to West Coast?s line-up.

Chad Morrison has also been named on the bench after missing the past two games. The pair comes in for retired champion Glen Jakovich and the injured Adam Hunter (hamstring).

The Saints, attempting to score a ninth consecutive victory, have made just one change to their side.

Skipper Lenny Hayes comes in after serving a two match suspension for striking. He replaces Robert Harvey who is sidelined by a calf complaint.

The senior debut of Raphael Clarke has been postponed for another time after he was cut from St Kilda?s extended interchange bench on Friday.

He is an emergency for the game with Leigh Montagna and Allan Murray.

Without Doyle, Ball will have to ruck almost the whole game again.

Would not surprise me if he has carried that for a while. That probably explains why he was sitting out most of the game against Essendon few weeks back.

Have to confess I'm baffled by the omission of Doyle. Given that Spider looms as the biggest danger, particularly if he moves forward, I'd have thought just instructing Ball to stay with him would be the go. Ball may not be a natural defender but he's the only one with the physique to match Everitt.

Guess we will see a bit more of Saddo in the ruck this week. But if Roos is not prepared to risk Goodes there anymore, it seems a bit strange that he is prepared to play the lighter Saddo in that position if he doesn't absolutely have to.

Yes, very strange to go without height, against height. But if they don't have dutchy or thommo, then maybe that is the reason!?!?!

I remember a runt of a bloke used to ruck, all the time years ago, he just used to run up and jump over the ruckman to get the tap.

He wasn't too bad either. Maybe that might be the plan for Saddo.

Apologies if already mentioned but seems to me there is a chance Goodesy will be a late omission and Doyle will come in........

Seems to me that Roosy is going to try and turns a potential Hawks strength (height) into a liability. With the smaller players getting the job over the talls for us, looks like they are going to try and run a lot more and be proactive and make Hawthorn stop us rather than us tailoring our team to be negative and try to stop them.

It goes back to what he's said before about Brisbane, that if you worry about all their guns, you then end up matching up your most damaging players in a negative role, meaning you have less attacking options too.

I guess come 4pm on Sunday we'll know if this was a terrible error in judgment, or a masterstroke. Says to me that we will see a reasonable margin one way or the the other (4 goals +).

                            I'm on the Chandwagon!!!

If you cannot compete for the premiership, it's better to be young and exciting than middle-aged and dowdy.
