    Looking ahead to remaining games

Crystal ball stuff. If I was tipping ahead for the rest of the year. I see us finishing on 12 wins and somewhere between 6th & 8th.

Big games include Carlton at Optus, Brisbane at home AND this week. Doggies is a real danger game.

    Thoughts ?

Western Bulldogs vs Sydney Swans W
Sydney Swans vs. St Kilda L
Port Adelaide vs. Sydney Swans L
    Sydney Swans vs. Collingwood W
    Carlton vs. Sydney Swans W
    Sydney Swans vs. Adelaide W
    Geelong vs. Sydney Swans L
    Fremantle vs. Sydney Swans L
Sydney Swans vs. Brisbane Lions W
    Sydney Swans vs. Kangaroos W
    Melbourne vs. Sydney Swans L
    Sydney Swans vs. Essendon W
    Richmond vs. Sydney Swans W

Seems reasonable, although every game is unpredictable these days, not just for us.

That would give us 12 wins and place us about 8th, plus or minus a place.

      They are all winable IMO.
v Saints - How will the saints go out in the weather on a small ground ?
v Port - We beat them there last year in a final. Plus they have more injuries than us.
v Geelong - not as good as many think
v Freo - If we can get over the travel, we match up well against them
v Melbourne - Schuabs back to negate Neitz. Game over for the d's

In 1995, we and the Saints were the only two teams to defeat Carlton.

I tell you - not only can we do it but that match can turn around our whole season............

If you win/loss is realistic it would be a major worry. You have us winning only two away games - Blues and Tigers. On that basis, it wouldn't make any difference if we are in the 8 as we wouldn't do anything in the finals. If we don't improve from beating Freo and the Cats in Sydney to beating them on their home grounds then we're going backwards. Hopefully, we'll have some of our key players back from injury to come home strong in the back end of the season.

The "fairytale wins" last year were the Lions at the Gabba and Port at AAMI. If the Dees continue as they are then beating them at Telstra in R20 would be a similar achievement.

But there's an easier yardstick. Just as beating Brisbane was a mark of where we stood as a team last year, beating the Saints at the SCG would be a similar achievement or better. I bet the bookies won't think it likely!

Right now the competition seems to be finding who will be cannon fodder to the Saints in the Grand Final. The only way that the Swans can improve on last year's 3rd is to play Grand Final. If we can't beat the Saints at home in H&A then what chance do we have of beating them in the GF? I'm hoping that's the do or die approach that the Swans take into the Saints game.

Win that game and I bet no-one will be complaining about the atmosphere at the after match function.

Finals is completely different. I simply can't judge Saints until September. Your logic if applied means that we had no right to beat Port in the final last year. Conversely, beating the Lions twice last year in H&A didn't mean much come September.

This year's comp is very very even, (mediocre some are saying). Saints are IMO the only standout but with my reservations listed above.

What do you want me to do. Mark every match as a win ? Simply my thoughts at this stage. Expectation only. Would love to see others' thoughts.

The trouble is we have the potential to win the unexpected games and lose the expected. Very Frustrating.

Sorry, that was a thinking out loud. No, your list is reasonable but if it turns out to be accurate, we're in trouble.

It's not knowing but hoping that's the fun.

For the SCG Lions game last year I took a Canadian friend to his first footy game. As we walked over I told him that we probably wouldn't win. Getting thrashed would be depressing, just losing would be what the fans expected and a win would be wonderful. The win was so sweet.

Then I flew up to the Gabba game. The ticket was very cheap but I thought "why waste a weekend to watch us lose?" The win was one of my highlights of last year.

Even yesterday people were telling me how magical it was to be in Adelaide for the Port final win.

If I ever thought my team really had no chance I wouldn't go to the game and I'd probably stop following the team. You have to hand it to Pies supporters (I never thought I'd write that sentence) - they have infinite belief in the superiority of their team even when they rarely win.

Like the Brisbane games last year, I don't expect us to beat the Saints. But I reckon we're in there with a chance.

The Saints have to drop a game eventually. The Saints are as dominant this year as Essendon were in 2000, but the Bombers lost a game.

The most likely game that the Saints will lose will be some interstate game. Brisbane at the Gabba is my guess, but if we get Shauble back in time for the Saints game we are a chance.

well it would be ironic if the Swans and Carlton turned out to be the only two teams to beat the Saints this season....

...aaah, who am I kidding - Carlton have NO chance of beating the Saints next week

This St. Kilda game has the potential to have a similar effect to the "if it bleeds we can kill it" Lions v Bombers game in 2001. (Note the word "potential" - at this stage it's very unlikely this would actually happen).
