    St Kilda /Gehrig

Ok, I'll say it now. I am looking forward to this game, and I think the swans are just the team to end the pretenders run. The game against the dogs may have been a 20 odd point win, but was played like a 100 point win, so apart from a % boost, we can take a lot out of that game. A nice comfortable win by the saints will just lull them into a false sence of security. Against the dogs out midfield was awesome, and our ruck division is awesome (how impossible did those words seem a few weeks ago?!)

We match up well with the saints, except for one small area.....Gehrig!. Goodes will take Rewiold and teach him about the huge gulf from future champion to current champion. But who will take Gehrig ? (If we had Schuable, I'd be happy). Will James get a recall ?

    Its the million dollar question.

Only 10 goalkickers for them today, only problem is that they kicked 31 goals between them. We really are going to need to get first hands on the ball and convert on the scoreboard when we get the opportunity.

A tough ask, but it can definitely be done.

    I'm on the Chandwagon!!!

I dont think we'll see a free flowing game if we want to have any chance at winning. The Saints play like the Lions, and since we came to within 2 points of winning in round 1, I believe we'll see more of a keepings-off, high possession game employed by Roos. We definately dont want to get into a shoot-out with their forwards and midfielders. They seem to kick goals accurately from anywhere; our guys hit the posts and kick behinds with agonising consistency.

Swans can't stuff around, simple as that.

The Saints have proven they will crush you if you aren't up to it.

Geez the saints impress me...I do think we can do them, but a lot of things that haven't gone right yet this year have to go right on Sunday.

And if pretenders = Wizard Cup premiers and 10-0 start of the season, I wish the swans were pretenders Barry!.

We have no one that can match up against Gehrig - that is a worry.

If Goodes takes Reiwoldt we'll see whether he can actually match up defensively against a good CHF.

          And who will take Hamill?

Only 10 goalkickers?!?! That's a decent number of people having shots.

          Major test for us!

Here is a go for match-ups:

            C Bolton v Hamil
            Goodes v Reiwolt
            Barry v Gehrig
            Crouch v Milne
            Mathews v Guerra

With hopefully James for back-up if they decide to push Kosi forward.

But looking at the above we are going to need to get more of the ball than them in the midfield to have any chance of pulling it off.

Would suggest the keeping off strategy we employed against Brisbane is used this week, if they don't have it they can't hurt us no matter how much better they are.

31 goals is as much an indication of where Carlton are at as St Kilda. No point worrying about that. I'd be more worried if the Saints had lost this week.

                Goodes - Reiwold
                Barry - Hammil
                James - Gehrig.

I think the only way to beat Gehrig is team structure and tactics, so it wont really matter whos on him. I think Roos will find a tactic to at least negate him and if we keep him to 4 goals thats a win.

But as much as our defense seems stretched, there's is even more stretched with ours (assuming Hall and Davis play).
So if comes down to Ruck (we are well ahead - Ball is in career best form, and Doyle has improved a lot recently), and midfield - on paper they are stronger, but ours had a day out against the dogs. Quality ruckwork is helping no end.

Dont under estimate their defense, Penny, Hudgton, Mcquire and Kosi when needed are all very under rated. Add in Aussie Jones and Heath Black and they are very balanced.

What if we turn the tables on them and do to them what they did to us in 2002?

Petenders ?? Well I have seen a lot of Saimt Kilda this year and they are the best looking Pretenders I have ever come across.
If they are pretenders, I wish that the Swans were pretending a little more, cos they do not look as good.

In reality, the only difference between 2003 Swans and 2004 swans has been kicking accuracy.
You need to remember that we in those 5 losses this year we have had to travel to Perth and Brisbane. And hit the D's and Dons in peak form. A horror draw.

The swans form has been a bit missing, and Schuabs is missnig, but we were hit and miss early 2003 too.

I just saw something against the dogs that showed we are back. If you beleive forwards kicking straight is partly luck, then it wont be as bad again.

This is the most spot on match-ups I have seen. For people who say Barry will get Hamill - there is no chance - Bolton is a cert.

Matthews and Crouch can still provide there attacking game on these two player as well as keeping them quiet, so that is fine. However may swap crouch with Bevan, either one not too fussed.

Barry will get Gehrig - ala his game on lloyd. But his run will be negated again due to this in Schaubles absense.

Will need to rely on Kennelly and Bevan as our main rebounders for this game.

The main worry as everyone has noted is Barry on Gehrig. Leo is gonna get destroyed if their midfield get ontop.

When Schauble isnt in the side it really rams home for me that he is almost if not equally importance to our side as A.Goodes.

If Barry lines on Gehrig we might as well conceed the game.

If Barry lines up at half back, and starts breaking lines and running out of defense along with kenelly, the saints forward structure might unravel to a degree and we are in with a shot.

There is no point playing to their game. "Their" game is winning games by 100 points. You've got to put them off their game, by chasing ours.

grant thomas is old-school and is slow to react. A bit like Ayres, and can be undone by the other team, if the other team is switched on.

Well, I suppose it doesn't really matter who we put on Gehrig, none of our defenders are gonna do better than one or the other.

May be good to bring James in this week for Gehrig, so we can put Leo on the flanks.
