I agree. A number is made special and remembered when the player who wears it does so on his sleave (like wearing your heart on your sleave). The emotion may be more than as those before you, where the skill isn't. Or the skill is there, only to be lacking with emotion/passion.

37 is a number that many would recognise as one relegated to rookies, or draft picks, but when a player stays in that number and makes it his own as Goodesy has then it becomes special in it's own right.

But do we remember the number or the player who wore it.

At present when we speak of the number 14, it brings to mind Skilton and Kelly. But surely there are others who wore it that are over looked.

IMO the players should know who wore their numbers previously, the Legends as well as the no so memorable. We get to walk this earth and become the people we are firstly from our ancestors. Our elders help form a base we can use to grow from. We need the great as well as the no so, to help make the Great ones that much more appreciated.

I suspect it will be brought out of the cotton wool pretty soon.

How about giving it to Bevan for next year? He's a local NSW boy, raw and tough. His early steps in AFL footy have been impressive but he still has a way to go - he could yet be anything from a one year wonder to a 200 game player. I don't think that giving him the no 14 would be telling him that he is earmarked to become the next champion for the Swans. But being a local boy I reckon he represents the heart, soul (and future) of this club as much as legends like Kelly and Skilton.

Careful there, Lizz, you're agreeing with me, again (see my post on the first page)

Sorry Sharp - confess I didn't read the whole thread, just dived in at the end. But we can't both be wrong, can we?!

That was a great suggestion by Lizz.

Bevan is perfect for the jumper.

Remember, players generally have to 'earn' a jumper under the number 30.
They shouldn't give #14 to some first gamer, just as they shouldn't give #20 or #5 etc etc

For me, Bevan is the perfect choice.

Though as others have quite fairly pointed out, I was far from the first to suggest it.

The more I think about it, the more it makes sense. If Bevan carries on the way he is at the moment, I'm sure he'll be invited to "apply" for a lower number at the end of the year. An article earlier this season suggested that is the way the club seems to work.

But I doubt he'd be game enough to ask for no 14 - you'd have to be pretty confident in yourself to do that as a young player. Hopefully PK will have the same idea that we have and make the suggestion himself.

Just to dismiss the idea of the #14 going to your current captain because Richmond thought of it first is silly.

I think it is a great idea and deserves a serious look.

I know players become attached to their #'s, but I would seriously doubt that anybody would not consider it a further honour to wear the #14 as well as the honour of captaining one of the original clubs in the game.

                            Considerate more than silly.
I knew him as a gentle young man, I cannot say for sure the reasons for his decline
We watched him fade before our very eyes, and years before his time

                              Very much agree.

14 was worn by the most loved players from both eras of this club, who also happen to be the captain and the vice-captain of our Team of the Century.

IMO Number 14 should be revered at this club, and I love the captain idea.

If that doesn't happen - and Bevan continues his development, I could see him being the one, but I think they should be careful.
