    Footy in NSW

Gday boys and girls. I'm just wondering what your opinions are on the state of footy in NSW. Like is the game growing there? Could soccer take over? Will there be a second team in years to come? Are you sick of rugby? Could you move from the SCG? Is footy bigger in NSW than Queensland? yadda yadda...I just want to hear it from you guys.
    Thanks guys, and GO SAINTS!!!

    WHY YOU LITTLE! :P

    you must be joking.

well personally i cannot speak at the state of football in nsw except for the swans. I have not seen the local leagues and such. Perhaps there could be a nsw team in the vfl?? its supposidly the second best comp in australia. Here in tassie we dont have a statewide comp anymore, but have the devils in the vfl and its reasonably popular. The only problem is it becomes focused on that comp. By that i mean it ignores the fact its there to better the footy scene in the state. Tries to go out and buy players from other states to win the flag. Sadly the local comps are quite pathetic. So i guess i just argued against my original point.

I dont see how you could have 2 nsw afl teams yet though. If the crows can have 44,000 members we should have more given we are in the biggest state, but because we havent gotten as popular as the crows are at home, we dont. So until the swans can start to really and truley dominate (and they are on the way and doing well) i dont see the point in thinking of another team.
Theres not much left to say

Well my 4 year old plays Auskick and his brother will no doubt do the same so I guess we're doing our bit!

        How is footy in Melbne?

There appears to be one team too many in St Kilda!

Ok, here are my two cents worth.

Yes the game is growing, but as many people have said, the support for the game ebbs and flows in the interest in the Swans. If we have a bad year, people (beside the tragic expats) won't be wanting to talk AFL.

Could soccer take over? Well, as a supporter of both codes, I can give a pretty qualified answer on this. Unlike in Melbourne where soccer is marginalised to some degree, most Sydney kids grow up playing soccer. They then move on to "rougher" sports like the rugby codes in their teens. Auskick and AFLNSW are targetting the kids too young to have been socialised into thinking that AFL was an uncool game to play; there has been success in changing people's attitudes. But the proof of this will be in 10 years, not now. If the Socceroos make the next World Cup, how many young kids thinking of wanting to emulate Goodesey will want to be Harry Kewell instead.

Is footy bigger in NSW than in Qld? No way, in pretty much every aspect footy in Brisbane and in Queensland is 5-8 years ahead of what it is in NSW. Sure having a champion team filled with stars hasn't hurt at all, especialkly considering how over the Broncos rugby league team most Queenslanders are. But the fact that several of the Lions stars and stars of the game are Queenslanders is proof of how far advanced footy is in Queensland over footy here. LRT aside, most of the NSW players are from the Riverina and NOT Sydney. Hopefully this will change, but the fruits of the labour will not be for another 5 to 10 years.

Should we have a second team? Well, this is a pretty hot topic. I don't want one as I don't want Sydney to suddenly cheer against the Swans after spending much of my life trying to get them to support us. Others such as Beaussie totally disagree with me on this issue. I'm cynical of teams coming up here in lieu of North Melbourne piddly efforts over the last couple of seasons.

Are we sick of rugby? Well, there are two codes for a start (Why do Victorians have no idea about this fact?). People have proven that they will attend big rugby union Super 12 and international matches. Many of these people often follow the Swans as well, which isn't surprising given our major areas of support are the North Shore and Eastern Suburbs, the rugger heartland.

Are people over the NRL, yes and no. Sydney NRL crowds have never been huge. Having said that, they are definitely bigger than they were. But AFL is always marketed to get people TO THE GAME. Especially under its present leadership (aka News Ltd) rugby league is marketed more as a tv sport than to get people through the gates.

Thanks for dropping buy. It is good to see the St Kilda supporters registering to RWO and enjoying the pre-match discussions. I fear they'll be enjoying the post match ones even more.

Nah I don't rub it in when we win.....well, only with posters I don't like. Don't worry, there's no one here.
Yeah you probably wouldn't get a second team unless you get up to 40k members, but even then it might not happen. There needs to be a base and rival for another team, like Port Adelaide.
I was a bit surprised at Brisbane being ahead of NSW. But I suppose winning 3 premierships wouldn't go un-noticed up there.
BTW I'm in SA not Victoria.
            Thanks for the replies.
