    Match Ups

Ok, my key match ups would be:

    Goodes v Riewoldt - I'm excited
Barry v Hammil - Will be a great contest
C Bolton v Gehrig - Bolts is the best option as he is stronger than Barry and allows Barry to run.
Bevan/Mathews v Milne - Bevan/Mathews will make Milne accountable and expose him
Nicks v Guerra - The battle of the old men look-a-likes
Williams v Harvey - 2 old ware horses head to head
Crouch v DelSanto - Crouch to tag out Ian Stewart jnr
Kirk v Hayes - Captain to dominate Lenny
J Bolton v Ball - Battle of the young guns
    Mathews v Powell
Hall v Penny - Hall will be too strong
O'Laughlin v Maxi H - Mick is way too silky

Watching the Captain take Hayes out of the game last year was pure joy. Then he laid a tackle on Reiwoldt that had a physio straight onto the ground.

I would really like to see Milne nullified. There's just something about him that really annoys me. I wonder what sledging he'll get about his social life?

Harvey was one of the few Aints that was dangerous throughout last year.

We'll have Stewie there this year - so we'll have a tougher team than faced them last year. Last year both Saddo and Fossie played blinders - too bad Saddo won't be there this week. We could use a bit more height.

B2 vs Gehrig? Big ask with the size difference. James maybe? But if their midfield is keeping Gehrig supplied we're in trouble anyway.

He's had tough asks before and risen to the occassion. J Brown and M Richardson are two examples last year. He may not win every battle but he has a decent enough history.

        My tuppence worth....

Gehrig - Goodes. Put our best on their best. Only time I've seen Gehrig intimidated was with Mal Michael - Goodsey is the only one who can match that presence and physical strength.

Riewoldt - Crouch. Has the pace to run with him and shut him out. I know he doesn't have the height but he'll keep him as quiet as possible.

Guerra - Bevan. 2 young players both in great form - mouth watering.

Hammil - Bolton. Gehrig too big and strong for Bolton, Hammil's the type of player he can do well on.

        Milne - James

        Kirk on Hayes

Leave Leaping and Tiger to do what we do best - use our pace. As many have said on this list, this game is not about worrying totally about what they do - make them worry about what we do.

Gee that much up is definately 'out there'. Can't see it happening in a million years. Riewoldt would absolutely kill Crouch, they are completely different players. It's like saying put Milne on Barry Hall.

Some good ideas, for mine though...

            Bevan - Milne
            Crouch - Guerra
Buchanan - Del Santo (let's see how far Amon's come!)

and of course Jenny Craig - Grant Thomas

Dal Santo hurts more with his disposals, why not put Kirk on him? Don't underestimate Max Hudgton, he has been playing well and is quite agile but also plays tall. What you need though is to force them to move one of their forwards into defence. Penny is ok but Schwartz is a battler who is benefiting form the good players around him. Gehrig has a few niggles so wouldn't it be nice to have them forced to move him back.

                  Reiwolt and Crouch??
                  Guerra and Bevan??
                  Milne and James??

Why? Riewoldt and Crouch - you're very probably right - but I'm simply throwing ideas around. Going to have to do something very different to beat them....

The other two are unlikely, but plausible...

You have to laugh, Crouch would be sporting Reiwolt at least 50cm.

I would expect the following on the weekend:

Barry on Gherig - you can't wrestle with this bloke he is too strong. But he is also very quick, going to need Barry to play in front and hope he can use his spring to get the spoil at the contest

Goodes on Reiwolt - Reiwolt roams far and wide up the ground, Goodes has the stamina to go with him and it will also let Goodes get more involved around the defensive 50 rather than back in the square

C Bolton on Hamill - actually a very good match-up, tough at the ball and is not moved off the ball very easy which Hamilll likes to do to his opponent

Crouch on Milne - Would like Crouch in the midfield but Milne could blow the game away in minutes so must be treated with respect

Bevan on Guerra - Similar size to each other and Bevan has proven he won't take a backward step if Guerra goes the physical on him

Leaves Kennelly to run and Mathews to be the linkman as that is what he does best for us.

Only issue is if they push Kosi or Penny forward. Will need James or Ball to cover him if needed.

Saddingtons worth to the team can now been seen as he could have pinch hit in the ruck while Doyle went forward if we got on top Grant Thomas would have to move Kosi or Penny down back which upsets their strucuture a bit.

Given that the Saints have a lot of talent and rarely play outdoors, even train indoors a lot, this would be the one game where feral elements might be an advantage.

I agree with DST re the matchups.I would prefer Crouch in the midfield tagging one of their guns and Bevan on Milne but I don't think Bevan has the guile to match Milne at this stage.
Guerra and Bevan should be fun to watch.

Gehrig is too much for either Bolton or Barry to handle. He is massive, they are giving away over 20 kilos and 10 cms (no crude jokes here either).

Thats not even the issue though. The issue is that this big monster is in some freak like form. If he was just big, maybe you would consider it, but he is on fire. B2 could not stop Richo this time around could he? Why? He found some freak form!

Personally, I would start Goodes on Gehrig and see how that settles. If it is working, wonderful, if not then make the appropriate change.

I do know this though, our backmen have to drag their opponents out of their respective comfort zones. If they prefer the goal square, then drag them up the ground etc

IMO On past few weeks I think Guerra is more dangerous, I dont think Milne will like Bevo's tenacious tackling, I think Crouch's aggression and strength is a better match for Guerra.
