Sydney Swans midfielder, Jarrad McVeigh, has come along way from being the fifth selection overall in the 2002 National?s AFL Draft, but he knows the journey has just begun.
McVeigh made his senior debut in round one this year against the premiers, the Brisbane Lions - where he collected 12 disposals and kicked one goal.
Since then the NSW-ACT under-18?s representative has played eight matches, six of them victories including last weekend against the Western Bulldogs (13 disposals, two goals).
His ninth match looks set to take place on Sunday afternoon when Sydney take on the undefeated St Kilda for their biggest challenge this season.
?The win on Saturday night was a good so we are hoping it can continue this week but we are expecting a really tough game,? McVeigh told Sportal.
?The main difference to us winning and losing is playing four quarters of footy.
?Against Hawthorn (round nine) we only played a half and still got up, so if we play for all four we will be hard to beat.
?We will also need to have more run from the backline, be really accountable as they are a great running team, and just have to man up and play hard footy.
?Hopefully with the home crowd support we can be the first to knock them off.?
The 19-year-old understands his role in the team of taking on the opposition?s fifth or sixth best midfielder, but hopes to increase his game time to further develop his game.
?When I come on to give other guys a rest I just have to work really hard and get myself the footy. It?s just coming to terms with coming on and off the bench which is really hard.
?In the past few weeks I have been struggling just trying to get game time, but (on Saturday) I got a fair bit of game time because of a few injuries, so I just hope to capitalise when I get on the field.
?But I am loving it (here) as it?s been a dream of mine to play AFL footy and I am playing now so it?s just fantastic."
