    Running Game

    Wonder if the boys were told that St Kilda were not a hard tackling side because alot of the time, guys ran with the footy, baulked or got rid of the defender and then ran some more.

    These extre metres gained from the breaking of lines really gave us some impetus.

    Looks like it was a plan because many of the guys did it especially Barry Hall who shrugged a lot of tackles.

      Leo broke many tackles in his wild rampant runs.

      And Tadgh, actually broke one tackle by running thru the tacklers head.

      Hall doesn't need to be told, he always tries to break tackles. Dermie described him against the Hawks "Like a buffalo with several lionesses hanging off him, trying to shake them off". I think he had 3 or 4 hawks trying to bring him down, but couldn't.

      Hard running pays off, and when they stop running.....they get smacked!!

          Wonderful to see the run back - had me out of my chair yelling even tho' I knew the result. Exciting stuff!
          He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)

              When Leo took off on his runs, he did so leaving Geh-big-useless-Rig behind him. This meant that someone else's opponent had to come after him, which freed up someone else on our team. And so it goes, those pretty handball chains - who said we were overusing it!?!? - until we have someone in the clear, streaming forward. Its the prettiest sight in this great game of AFL, and it certainly gets the whole crowd in a frenzied state of anticipation.

              Lets hope Leo is ok for the Port game.

                  I believe the running game, hard tackling and the ability to break tackles will be our trademarks for a long time and will be sustained as we draft more local kids who have played league or union at school. Paul Bevan is a good case in point and there will be more like him in the future. Have a look at our style out of the backline ? it is like rugby with a forward (hand) pass allowed and brilliant when it works. League and Union fans wait half the game to see breaks like that made, we see them often.

                      And just as importantly IMO was our preparedness to thump it long to the forwards (Maxfield stand up!) and not necessarily look for the perfect pass everytime.
                      I've been looking for this for a while, we have such a potent forward line we need to get it in fast first and foremost, the forwards can take it from there.
